They stopped reporting app installs two years ago when they hit 1 million, but at $3 per month per subscriber (the 50% deal has already ended) you get the idea. $36 million per year is almost as much as @Mikie makes from this site!

As an interesting experiment... I'd love to see if a club took their ride data off the TrailForks site to create their own mini-TrailForks app for a local area. Would TrailForks care? Would there be copyright infringement lawyer talk? Bored coronavirus minds want to know!

Thanks... I think the table at top of that stats page shows count of trails by use type, not count users by use type. I don't see anywhere that shows user count by type, just the 1M app installs and lower down 580k Trailforks user profiles. That's an interesting stat as it shows not much more than half the people who have downloaded the app haven't used it enough to set up a profile. Maybe less than half depending how many downloads since Sept 2018. I think you need a profile to be able to download regions to use the app properly. It would benefit MTBers to have a lot of hikers/trail runners using it to help subsidize the cost going forward - and to upload hiker trails so I can go ride them :sneaky:. I wonder why Trailforks doesn't show number of downloads to the present? It's not like they don't know that number, and number of profiles is probably the more relevant number.

They might put a stop to it if a trail association tried to delete trails in a local area but I suspect that would happen because local users would complain to Trailforks, and they would investigate what is going on. Now that people are paying for the app they would want to maintain an inventory of trails in each area. They'd probably hit the restore button on deleted trails, remove the local club as admin and find another local group to be the admin for that area. If they couldn't restore them local users would just start uploading those trails again. That's the power of user generated data. I've seen people complain about Trailforks capitalizing on their "work" to upload trail data and now charging for it. But those riders don't own the trail or the land it is built on. If they didn't put the trail on TF, someone else would have added it.

Up to a certain point Gaia had a single fee for lifetime use. You should be outraged they are making you pay an annual subscription fee now!

I have signed up but frankly have not much of a clue what more i will be getting out of it. I like the app a lot. A few weeks ago i used it like 15 times on one ride trying to find my way around Las Flores :thumbsdown:o_O. So that was already worth it, since it was a great ride. But nope, no clue what i just actually paid for

You can actually get a bare bones version for free. I needed/wanted more, so I decided to pay. Outraged? No, I think $25 a year (that's less than $.07 a day) for a premium 5 year membership with all the dohickeys is worth it.

Lots of talk about this. Kinda good since it’s a forum. ;)
I must be simple minded cuzz I’m just glad I don’t have to carry a paper map and guess where I am. I backpacked years before mountain biking and used a compass. That art is gone, like how to tell time on an analog clock or giving out change from a cash register. I’ll take the measly under $20 bucks a year app that frees me of old tech-less times and enjoy all that it provides. I'm sure for most it comes down to budget management. I don't have kids and pay for their cell phone bill or $150 dollar tennis shoes, no Disney or Netflix subscriptions, just basic TV Satellite and Internet subscriptions.

I use the crud out of TF to explore other locations and see how locals have connected trails to make 5 mile trails into a 30 mile adventure.

Since I don't use any of the features on TF other than to see which trails are in a region where I am riding AND to see where I am on the map during a ride, I will go for "if it's free, it's me" for now and give MTB-project a try. App added.
