I have a road bike that does a lot of sitting in the garage... been contemplating adding a hard tail to the stable again. Recently considered selling/trading in the roadie to buy the HT. There is plenty of room in my garage to add HT under the N+1 theory but the budget says otherwise atm.

Have any of you sold your road bike for another mountain bike and regretted not having a road bike?

You know that my answer will be N+1. I don't ride the roadie too often, but I do still like to get some roadie miles at times. I am glad that it's there when most of the local trails here are closed due to muddy conditions in the winter. I also spent more time on it when everything here was closed for Covid, but hopefully that was a one-time occurrence. And, the scenery is nice along the beach if you know what I mean. :)

I would keep the road bike. I just got off of mine.
It's a great tool for training, and recovery from injury. I use it on the trainer if I can't get out and it easily doubles as a fast commuter.
It's my Ferrari in the garage. Doesn't get out much but when she does...

But, you can also do all that on a hardtail. It's just not a Ferrari.

I was going to tell you to dump the road bike with no regrets, but @rossage is right.
I use my ancient road bike on my trainer in winter or recovering from injuries (hmmmm, seems I do a lot of injury recovery training).

Sell it with no regrets if you don't road or use it for training; hang on to it for the get back in shape from hibernation or recovery stuff.

Darn-it... i was hoping for an overwhelming roadie exodus... but there are some big roadie rides/challenges i still want to accomplish. Plus i do like the speed of the roadie when i'm out. I'm soo slow on the mtn bike that i feel like a kid when i'm on the roadie. lol

All good points. YES the scenery at the beach is amazing! :coffee:

Now i just need to focus on which HT to save for and build up.

And old road bikes are cool. They age well. 25 year old Dura Ace works surprisingly well...
Unfortunately, old mtbs pretty much suck compared to new, technology has fixed a lot of the older shortcomings.

Yes, they are and yes they do work surprisingly well. I restored this Bianchi last year. The geo takes some getting used to but it rides really nice!

If you’re going to sell it, now might be the time.
Is that the c15 or c17 saddle? And, how do you like it?

    Beautiful bike btw.

C17 Carved. Don’t have too much time on it, but initial impressions are comfy.

Cool color! Santa Cruz should make a bike in that color.

If it's a fancy-schmancy road bike you can get good money for, I would say sell it and replace with a less expensive one. Perhaps a cool vintage one like @pperrelle has! Then take the excess $$$ and put towards a HT. If it's already mid-range and you wouldn't get a whole lot for it, keep it for the few times you would ride it.

There's also the option of getting a modern gravel-grinder type bike and putting some fluffy modern slicks on it like the Rene Herse tires. Those are rad on a road bike, and you have the option of hopping onto dirt trails as the mood hits you.

Touche... actually my name should be "OldnSlow"... i just haven't gotten around to changing my screen name.

My road bike is a 2017 Trek Domane SLR 6 disc. Here is a picture... not sure you can see it but was too lazy to pull it out. Not sure this bike is fancy-schmancy enough to sell it and turn it into 2 bikes.

    I'm always up for ideas.

Since you have room, just add a hardtail. Have patience, ruthlessly scour for just the right frame and parts to make it economical. If you don't ride the road bike every year, ditch it.

Ohhh, disc... here's another option: Buy a 650B wheelset and the fattest tires you can fit. Probably around 42-45mm. That will change things up immensely! And get the fancy rubber Rene Herse sells... worth it. You'll be amazed at the ride, and where you can now ride it. It will seriously be a new bike for you!

Thought about the gravel approach but wasn't sure my carbon road frame would handle the abuse. Also not sure my body can handle a full rigid off-road. Plus i'm not sure i'm talented enough for drop bars off-road. lol

One way to find out!!! Stuff like Black* or similar fire/forest roads would be a lot of fun on it. If you dig that, you would then know you'd want a full on GG (Open UPPER for the win!). Wheels could move over to that. Or you'd hate it and know to never mess with it and get the hard tail you were already thinking of.

I'd sell the road bike and get a gravel bike. It's a nice compromise. Not as fast as my townie with 23c tires but cruises along faster than a mountain bike. They're real fun on fire road type stuff with mixed road. Not sure where one would go test ride one right now.
