Haaa, that thing wouldn't last long at all compared to steel, especially on a 1X drivetrain.

That cog lasted so long on your SS where the chain angle is constant, or on a 12 speed where the chain is hitting the teeth at different angles with every shift?

correct, but we are comparing materials. Both materials I referenced have been under the same conditions. Once has lasted 4x as long.

For SS, I agree with ti. For geared, I wouldn't do it. Too expensive and even if it does last longer, it would surely wear faster than it would on SS. Unless, of course, I had a full gold grille. :D

How will they handle getting smashed into rocks in the era of 1x bikes not designed to have bash guards?

    Some steels.

Out of the handful of grades of commercial titanium, only some are hardenable. 6Al4V/Grade 5 is the most common one and it can be reach a tensile strength comparable to a grade 5 bolt. It also work hardens so trying to straighten a bent sprocket will make it more likely to crack. Titanium is well-known in industry for having generally poor wear-resistance and is not typically used where it slides or rolls against something. There are a wide variety of steels that can be heat treated to strength and toughness that far exceeds titanium. I think most mass-produced steel sprockets aren't though.

Just some things to think about before spending $200 on a single chainring.
