High of 74 on Saturday and and upper 70s on Sunday... Perfect weather for a bigger ride.

The plan is to climb Lower Sam Merrill and take the Mount Lowe Road up to Inspiration Point (7.2/3200), "drop" Idlehour to the Mount Wilson Toll Road (13/4100, but 2500 feet of DH on Idlehour). From there, the plan is to turn left, and head up to Mount Wilson. I believe that stretch of the Toll Road is approximately 5 miles and 2500 feet (18/6600). I fully expect to be cursed out on Idlehour or the Toll Road... :Roflmao

The Cosmic Cafe should be open this weekend from 10:00-5:00. Food, drinks, restrooms, water fill stations, wi-fi...

The route stats to that point:
    Big One.jpg

From Mount Wilson there are options... And more options will be available next Spring when the forest re-opens. For now, though, it's an easy road descent to either Eaton Saddle for a front range finish (lots of chunk...), or to Red Box for a Gabrielino finish (14 miles of DH with medium chunk and exposure). Either descent puts the elevation for the day over 7000. The DH will be in that neighborhood as well, not counting the pavement DH off Mount Wilson...

Just an idea... And obviously not a beginner ride.

Hahaha! Poor Faustie. Here he is trying to gather some froinds for a local jaunt from his house, and the idea gets highjacked to San Juan and Palm Canyon.

I may knock this one out solo. The weather is going to be too accomodating... Although... Harding to San Juan would certainly tip the scales towards "brutal". I'm only 1 for 2 on that route and the last time was on the Highball. o_O

And... PCE may be ruined for me after doing the extended Double Art route at night. It's hard to justify driving out there for the standard fare after that, especially with Frog Hollow on the horizon. That ride set the bar for me out there...

I don't think the opening applies to HJ and Trabuco. The Warrior Society has been posting about the forest service's lack of enthusiasm for rebuilding/repairing them...

Is PCE groomed? Another rider here on IMTB said the start has been changed, bulldozed. No more jumps etc. Maybe Xavier has intell.

The original singletrack from pine view road was still intact 7 months ago, but the jumps were destroyed and the alternate lines bulldozed and covered in chamise and cholla. Not sure if anything else has happened over the spring/summer; I haven’t heard anything to that effect on Strava…

Actually, I need to get in some Strawberry rides before the winter comes. That snow was deep last year!

I would love to get a San Juan tour or ride some of Holy Jim. I have never been on Holy Jim and its been since early 2000s since San Juan.

There are a handful of worthy trails that are still closed, HJ being one. Area trails are a little raw and scrappy; you would eat it up, barby. Stay stoked for the re-opening...which itself will require some endurance. :(:geek:

With the re-opening, Pinos should be legal, right? It's been seeing traffic anyway... Or will the Trabuco closure make the beginning still illegal?

    Great question, I don't know.

Everyone knows that, when the road to Holy Jim parking opens, people will be hiking back to HJ Falls. FS apparently plans no curtailing of that. Sounds less than unlikely anyone will be stationed at the split to keep hikers from going farther up. How this same attitude extends to riding the trails I don't know. For sure they do not want lookers near the burned cabins on Trabuco side of the fork. Staying away from that area and riding a trail anywhere else in the closure seems like it would be an exceedingly low priority for FS enforcement.
