I DIDN'T Ride My Bike Today, Cuzz....

I’d be lying if I posted here today, so I won’t.

 

'tis but a scratch!

 

More of the same today. 75° water, calm winds, and 3-4' + waves everywhere means prime SoCal surfing. Everyone seems to know that at Huntington, Newport, Laguna, Salt Creek, Doheny, San Onofre, etc. No one seems to know that down at San O bluffs (Trails). Empty to the point of loneliness yesterday, except for the four dolphins who were trying to steal my waves. Actually, I think the waves belong to them. They are WAAAAAYYY better at it then I am.

Today was even better. Better wave shape today meant better rides, even if I did get exhausted trying to get back out. A couple dozen people scattered over a 1/4 mile yard stretch, but still no competition for waves.

No surfing for 8 months, then 7 days in July so far. Bike riding can wait. Although, I did equal my June riding total in July already with 4 rides.

Those who know me know I don't use STRAVA and they know why. But this...this is something that actually might help me strive for quantifiable improvement. As long as the data is private. I don't want to compare myself to others, set PRs or have others see my sessions.

This was from my friend Brian this morning, on his longboard at Bolsa Chica. 12 waves in under an hour is about double my typical wave count (I really do suck).


Look at that riding-to-not-riding ratio. 2 minutes, 19 seconds of riding in an hour. I think MtB has a higher payoff ratio. I guess one could compare climbing as paddling, and descending as actually surfing. Then it becomes a little more comparable.

That wasn't me. I was at Trail 6 making dolphins laugh. I would have had about 4 lines on my graph today.

 

I don't have fun when I don't catch waves. I get frustrated and decide to sell my boards and stick to mt. biking.

But then, once in a blue moon, I catch a good one and it's magic, so the cycle starts over again.

PS: I have a serious N+1 problem in surfing that I am not afflicted with in mtb. One bike is fine. 5 surfboards is at least one too few. That's because I am usually looking for a board to make up for my lack of wave reading skill. I surf fine, once I'm up.

Now if only it had live in-the-water traffic avoidance and Great White detection!

 

Oh boy, sounds like pressure. And all you gotta do to ride is get to the top of a hill-- descent guaranteed. That may be why I switched from surfing to skiing.

 

Getting ready for other stuff.

 

Went and saw Social D in Avila with my son and did some boogie boarding in Cayucos, Cambria and Pismo. Haven’t done that in years. Too much fun!!

 

Be careful up there, the Great Whites patrolling those waters like to chew on humans.

 

I've forgotten what a mountain bike looks like

The dealership I work for was sold after 42 years being owned by the same family.
New owner, new computer system.
New owners and new bosses seem nice, big family owned dealer group out of Michigan with over 42 dealerships owned nationwide.
New (to me) computer system is taking some getting used to. Went from using ADP/CDK to Reynolds & Reynolds (Ignite) and some of my old data is not playing nice with the new system
So, long story short, I get home mentally drained and physically drained from working long days
On a positive note, my new General Manager used to race MTB's in the 90's, back in the days of NORBA Looks like I might have a new after work ride partner

 

I know they have a lot of drone footage of sharks in the area. They also have signs of when the last time one was seen in the area

 

Ask your General Manager if he raced the 1996 Norba Nationals at Traverse City, Michigan? What class did he race? I raced Expert and I think I took 7th.

 

Sharks...mountain lions....same same. Different environment.

Hah, right on, T. My post-teen self pretty much did!

 

After working out in the heat all day yesterday, I just could talk myself into going out and riding in 97* temps at the Oaks.

 

Not that I ride during the week but it's all I can do to get up on the weekend to ride after being in the heat all week. I struggle walking out to my car in the evening after work.

 

I was busy hiking with my better half elsewhere, at 10,500 feet.

 

Cool picture of Bryce? anyways I did not ride my bike today cauze I worked late and it never cooled down. It was 87 and humid at sunset. I am too old for those harsh conditions. Last night it was 84 and not so humid so I rode. It amazes me how close to a limit that I will not ride. Back east I would ride every evening at 95 degrees and 95%. Here on the bight I am so spoiled that 87 is too hot.
