The wife and I demoed two ebikes this weekend up Tapia and OMG, what fun. I could not stop smiling the whole time. I know this is the beginning of my ostracization on this forum, but it was fun. I won't bore you with what happened $10,000 later.

Thanks for the heads up.....they aren’t legal in most places here in OC....but I didn’t have any intention, interest or desire to try one anyway.

I’ll be doing an ebike off road ride in Cabo next week. The friends I’m going with would have no desire to do an actual MTB singletrack ride so this is my next best option. That being said, I can guarantee you that the ride will not result in me spending more $$.

Its all good, just glad you are happy. I'm not going to judge you because of what kind of tranny you have on your bike. That's your prerogative. On the trail we all piss on the same bush.

I spun on one around a parking lot on one. I could see the appeal to some, but not me.

Almost semi considered the idea for my girlfriend...but her fitness is coming along nicely, and I fear the bike getting her into more trouble instead of helping her enjoy the ride more.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! (with apologies to Theodor “Dr. Suess" Geisel)

    Congratulations!
    Today is your day.
    You're off to Great Places!
    You're off and away!

With an ebike in your hands.
    And feet in your shoes.
    You can steer yourself
    any direction you choose.

    ...but stray nary far,
    Or soon you shall see,
    The battery dies,
    And a-hiking you’ll be.
In your shoes with your feet,
With your feet in your shoes,
    Consider a pedal bike,
So you don’t wear your shoes.
(No pun intended, or is it? I don’t know anymore).

    It's a sad affair
    when you no longer dare
    To ride on your bike
    with all of you might

    There is such persistence
    for cycle assistance
    Just one more example
    that some choose not ample

    Not referring to muscle
    but mentality hustle
    As youth want it easy
    others see cheesy

    Many excuses
    for such motor uses
    We resort to NiCad
But I find it... sad. :(

Yeah, yeah, yeah... All of you closet poets. For me, it's pretty simple. I look at them like a box of oatmeal cookies from Sprouts. I always have really good intentions, but they are just too damn easy. "Just one" turns into "I need another box" pretty damn quick. E-bikes would be the same. :p

Having been on one type of motorcycle or another since I was 5 years old I would just buy a dirt bike if I wanted something with a motor in it. I may try an e-bike just for the heck of it but genuinely have no interest in them.

Dude! You said what I've been thinking...
The "e" in e-bike is not electric, it's "excuse".
Everybody on those things has an excuse as to why.

    11!

And I PRed a climb yesterday, so now I'm in some foggy existential single speed crisis. :p And I'm slowly compiling a list of full suspension bikes. It's a damn slippery slope.

Yup. Pretty soon you’ll be on a pedal-assisted rig, then throddle-power, then 2-stroke, etc. The truly righteous are barefoot, naked hunter-gatherers; anyone else is just making excuses as to why this tool or that tool is needed to traverse the landscape. But if the point is to simply have fun, then the entire conversation is moot, and everyone gets to do whatever.

Yes, I imagine they are quite a hoot. I assume you got one for you and one for her.

But yes, please use them where they are legal.

I took a Pivot Shuttle E-Bike out for a parking lot ride, that thing was fun, but I would never take it into the wild.

No excuses here, it was fun, period, end of story. Still have the tracers to kick around on.
Luckily, where we ride (Tapia mostly) it is very legal. Same with Skypark. Not sure about Semi or Las Virgenes, but we don't ride there much and have other bikes for that.

We rode dirt bikes for years, until my wife broke her Fib/Tib. She figured mountain bikes were safer, HA!! Less weight to fall on her is her guess which is how she broke her leg on a 230 pound CRF250X. I think I can judge both, and they are both fun. I was tired of changing oil every 3 rides and rebuilding the motors every year or two.
