Coronavirus. Not to be confused with Norcovirus.

I have a dark sense of humor and like to joke. But what I am joking about in this thread is not that coronavirus is serious or that any death is a tragedy. Rather I am laughing at the media circus, the ignorance, and the lemming-like self-defeating behavior.

Here are some sobering statistics:

Coronavirus in the US (as of 3/9/2020):
Total cases: 605
Deaths: 22

2019/2020 flu season in the US (as of 3/1/2020):
Total cases: 29,000,000+
Deaths: 16,000+

It is within this context that I laugh at people hoarding toilet paper. Coronavirus better up its game! Only 60 days left before warm temps and humidity drop the transmission rate to zero!

 

And for what it's worth... my dad went in today for surgery for lung cancer. 5 hours in the operating room, and they removed one of his lung nodes and part of his lymph nodes... but everything looks really positive!

People every day are dealing with REAL health issues... instead of whether there are cooties on the Sharky's salsa ladle handle.

So coronavirus can blow me!

Granted we have more medical advances since then.. But food for thought no?

 

Sorry, no. It's hype. Those who are succumbing have underlying health conditions. This is no different than the cold and flu. I wish I had a few thousand dollars to drop into the stock market. I'd clean up in a month.

 

Not saying anything about severity or anyone succumbing.
Just putting it out there that this one might not just disappear, and will still be spread for a while.
Just a new bug that may become a norm with the other cold and flu viruses.

As of right now, the r0 is almost double that of the flu with the current data (which doesn't account for the majority of people who have it and don't even realize it)

No one here is arguing that it's killing healthy people. But we are all likely to catch it or know someone who does in the next year. NBD for most of us. Doesn't mean it's not going to spread....

And the whole Spanish flu thing above wasn't to compare them in intensity.. Just to provide an example that summer means jack Sh!t a lot of times

Inventory levels appear to be in inverse relation to their utility. For example... 50 lb bags of rice out of stock. How are you going to cook rice without water? Inquiring minds want to know!!

 

You've got a water heater....matches....charcoal is not high on the list for those who are freaking out.

 

I have a tankless water heater. And I only have about ten rolls of TP in the house. And no firearms. I'm a goner...

 

I’ll bet the number of cases is 10-50x larger than the official tally. In the last couple weeks me, my wife, my neighbors, and all my coworkers and wife’s coworkers had a cold or a flu of some kind. Coronavirus? Who knows, nobody I know went and got tested and tests aren’t readily available for everyone yet anyway. Most won’t be able to tell the difference between covid19 and the typical cold/flu.
I am concerned about my 3 elderly in-laws though, ages 74-86, who live nearby and are our responsibility. Luckily they don’t go out much and have no underlying major health issues (except for poor memory so they don’t think to wash hands often). My wife’s crazy aunt who lives in San Felipe, Baja, is planning on visiting next week and staying with my in-laws, but catching a ride here and back with her friends who are going on a CRUISE for a week leaving from Long Beach. Jesus people, I’d stay in Baja! Gonna try to convince.
5 people tried to shake my hand at work the other day. Jesus, that custom has GOTTA stop. At least it seems everyone is now washing their hands all the time.

That's an easy one. All the guys with the large armories advertise that they have them (example: "III%" stickers). Just take theirs after they have a heart attack!

My wife actually had me buy the shotgun when I freaked her out during the Ebola "crisis". She was watching the news and asked if I was concerned about Ebola in the US. I said nope - what I was concerned about was Ebola in Central America or Mexico... because they don't have the resources to treat/control it and the next day 2 million people would be pouring across the border.

Not that I'm a prepper, but I DO acknowledge we live in an earthquake zone. I don't fear a virus which may or may not impact me. I fear the big earthquake that IS coming and WILL impact me. Hence why I owned three cases of MRE's, have plenty of bottled water, and yes, even toilet paper. Not as a hoard, but as three week's supply in the event of total loss of electricity, water and gas (which won't happen in a virus outbreak).

I have a dual-fuel camp stove and dual-fuel camp lantern. With two cars and full gas tanks, I can cook for a LONG time on a camp stove.

All of this CostCo panic just indicates to me how few people in this state are even remotely prepared for an earthquake. Which also indicates to me how many don't have earthquake insurance.

As people are witnessing in this event, it isn't the actual civil emergency that is the danger. It is peoples' reaction to it that is. This isn't even a big emergency and you have people coming to blows over rolls of toilet paper.
