Looking back I think I was best happy with 1x11. Less finicky a little more clearance Clarence for the chain on cogs. Seems less noisy as well....
I really like the set up on the DV9. 30t x 10x51. I don’t really run out of top end and really have several bail out gears when we get into supah steep technical climbing. Perfect adventure bike!

How about a continuously variable drive train (internal belt drive)? It adjusts output continuously according to the input it receives.

Sliced bread IS important otherwise a sandwich uses 2 entire loaves of bread... Too much carbs.

Ohh Drive train... Yeah I been watching all this not sure where I am going to end up with next upgrade / bike.

I always wondered what the best thing was before sliced bread came along. Maybe we should start a new one like "the best thing since dropper posts". Then watch the quizzical look on about 99% of people's faces. BTW, agree with Mikie on slicing my own bread (from Whole Foods, YUMMY!)

I was wondering if the SS community would take the bait...I thought about writing a more complicated post that would sacrifice brevity for clarity, but I decided that I’d rather just hit “post.”:thumbsup:

+1 on the 1x11, I have it on my Kona with a BOX drivetrain. I prefer it over the 1x12 on the new ride. I wish they made 12 speed cassettes with a 42 as the big gear(low) with a better spacing and use of the gear ratios.

You guys all seemed to miss the part about nothing in between the 42t and 50t cog (or now 52t). But, whatevs. I am stoked as can be about the ratios of the top four on the Shimano 10-51 cassette - 51-45-39-34 - Perfect for the stuff I climb.

No. That's about it. I don't get out much. Maybe add Whiting Road, Modjeska, Emerald Canyon, Laurel etc.

Holy Jim and Maple Springs a couple of times each. Santiago Oaks and San Juan Trail maybe once a year. I used to climb from Metcalf Bay to Skyline Trail in Big Bear a lot, and Gray's Peak, but not since my Sis in Law sold their cabin.

I assume you are attempting to make fun of me by showing how limited my riding is. That's an old tune, but feel free to sing it. I'd rather ride frequently on local trails than spend my domestic good-will points driving. But I usually get in a few special rides away from base camp each year - Palm Canyon, Wrightwood, GE, Big Bear, CO, UT, Canadia, etc)

I truly tend to believe that the people that really need the 52t cog....are not gonna care that the jump from the 42t is so big. Like so many other things, you just get used to what you are running.

Then again, I'm contemplating putting the 34t ring back on my 11 spd SRAM drivetrain.

The bigger the jump between gears, the more studly the rider is. I'm waiting for Sram to come out with a 2 speed cassette, 10-52 (with nothing in between). Now that's badassness!

The closest I'm aware of is shimano makes a 10-45 rear cassette with better spacing.

@Mikie oh fresh home made bread! Have some olive oil rosemary dough rising in a bowl now. Itll be baked, fresh and ready to slice for sandwiches by the time I'm home from my ride today. ;):)

And I'm a shimano guy. Love the double upshifts and the option of shifting under load. But the 51 tooth gets virtually no use, i just can't climb that slow. Or is it my legs don't spin that fast? Has a 32 front ring now and ill be trying a 34 when its worn out. Maybe it'll find some use then.....or maybe it'll be a waste and will end up back on 32....o_O

Maybe they heard from racers who wanted 11 properly spaced gears plus a “bonk” gear?

And my point about triples is that triples shift worse, so this is still a big improvement.

    dunno, just spitballing ideas...

Having been in a triple until a month ago, I fully agree. I feel like the 30 x 42 is pretty close to my 22 x 34, which was the easiest combo.

You can use your 51 if you are ever riding behind me! I've made you come unclipped several times as you try to stay upright at "moving trackstand" speeds behind me.

(I don't actually use my 51 very often either - or didn't prior to the Great Cinco de Mayo Body Slam of 2020)

It's a skillset you can learn. I've had more than one person tell me they "can't ride that slow" when they are behind me on a climb. On a bike tour in Crested Butte, the guides told us before we started up Teocalli that "the slowest climber is the winner here" so I told them "I'm your Huckleberry" and proceeded to bring up the rear :D I won't pretend to imply I had any chance of making that climb as only the male guide cleaned the entire climb but I passed 2/3 of the group before I had to dismount and walk....a lot.

    +1. Savvy guide.

I started pushing how slow I can pedal up things when my bike is loaded. I was surprised at the results. Then I found the technique useful for any tough uphill pedaling including SS. I can recover just enough to continue. If you can really put down the power, it's probably a waste of time, but the minimal recovery could be useful for mortals.

Nice reading at an opportune time.
I'm going to be putting some XT 12 spd on my Fuse next week. I knew from the shop that riders were up-sizing their chainrings once they started running the 10-51 so I'll be using the 32t to start.
Hoping to be able to use more of the middle and lower cogs rather than wearing out the same three.
