Saw that. Can't give you a "like" but I appreciate you sharing.

A few years ago, there were 75 deaths in Southern CA by motorists hitting cyclists - in one year. In one relatively small geographic region - not nationwide.

Can you imagine if any other sport were that deadly? "Another recreational-league basketball player was killed today as he..." Or "yet another lethal shark attack in Southern CA waters, making it the 75th fatality this year..."

So sorry for the family's loss, especially under such senseless circumstances.

I would say "be careful out there.." but it's not up to you as a rider. You can be as careful as possible, but cannot control what others do behind you in their 5000 lb vehicles.

Be careful out there as a driver.

This happens very often in my neighborhood as well. I really can't enjoy riding around on our streets because you have to be aware of everything in every direction, every second.

We have the best weather in the US for people who enjoy road biking but it definitely comes with risks due to having the most crowded roadways as well. I personally think cell phones, specifically texting, has made road biking 100X more dangerous.

Yah, I’m sorry hertz, but since the freedom is gone it’s not my place, or your place to say what you think. Soft is soft. Better I just go on a ride were it’s safe from cars and forget about it!

I can’t even click on that link..., head in the sand, I know, but I can’t even watch the news.
I agree 100% with staying in the dirt, I’ll take my chances with a few whackos and wild animals.

On the contrary, it seems like you can say or tweet anything these days no matter how incorrect or how hateful. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go monger some fear.

Being the son of an old school truck driver, and being a motorhead, I may take my driving WAY more serious than most (most people call me boring). So I feel NO sympathy for lousy drivers. Laws are rarely enforced, driving everywhere for anything is strongly encouraged. That combination makes the statistics for people like me, who prefer NOT to drive, very grim.

I'm not going to stop road riding. I'm not getting scared out of doing what I love. But I do wish gas prices were $20 a gallon.

Mike Kreza, the Costa Mesa Fire Captain, succumbed to his injuries earlier this morning. He was the cyclist hit yesterday in Mission Viejo. He was married with (3) young, elementary aged girls.

I drove by the location of the incident 4 times this past weekend. The subject roadway is nothing like the 3rd world roadways provided in the Inland Empire, yet Mike Kreza was struck.

We must be careful vehicle operators.

Bless Mike and his Family. And bless Leslie Pray and her Family. And bless @Sidewalk and @Runs with Scissors and @Voodoo Tom (and those of you I am neglecting to mention) who routinely cycle to work. It benefits everyone on multiple levels. Thank you, and hang in there!

Edit: if you don’t believe in all that blessed sorcery stuff, no problem. You still have better odds since it is possible the vehicle operators do.

I am certainly lucky that the majority of my commute is on a dedicated bikeway, away from traffic. I feel like it is a freeway for bicycles, and makes it FAR safer and more convenient for people to ride to where they need to go. Just like any other freeway does for cars. Investing money into bikeways gives people the opportunity to do so.

That said...it is constantly being abused by off roaders. People break in on motorcycles and off road vehicles all the time. And, right now, a section of the trail is closed detouring me for a couple of miles on to a 50 MPH road with a shoulder full of glass. That section has been closed for a YEAR now, which was already scheduled for a long 6 months. Imagine the 91 freeway being close for 6 months, 24/7! And, the city of Norco is no help trying to complete the bike path from Riverside to Corona. And I actually do know people who do the commute from Riverside to Orange County by bike.

I understand that it isn't for everyone. I was forced into it financially, and fell in love with it.
