If you are not bonking....then nutrition is not your problem. You are just not used to spending lots of time at the end of your capabilities.

No....it is not like drinking an energy drink, and getting amped up.

What it will do is replace all those things you have to bring on your ride....no more snickers/Cheetos/granola bars. Just makes it simple. The idea is to base it on your need for calories per hour. The think about stuff like snickers/cheetos/some granola bars is the amount of sugar in them. They give you a quick lift, but usually the crash isn't too far off.

I'm certainly not a chemist or nutritionist, but our bodies need sugar during intense workouts. There are many types, however... And most of the other products include the one that gives me the gut bombs: maltodextrin. It was really the lack of "gut bombing" that kept me on Tailwind.

With that said, though, I do not use Tailwind for anything less than 2 hours. I just don't need that much sugar or electrolytes for that short of a workout anymore. It is best consumed when you are really taxing the body... When I was in the 300 pound range, I taxed the body opening the garage door, and needed the electrolytes from start to finish. :D

There are studies providing information that sugar is good and others saying its bad. But for me that's a lot. You can find Gatorade G2 that has 7 grams of sugar in it unlike the regular Gatorade which has about the same or more than the Tailwind.

    Better Absorption
Tailwind’s glucose/sucrose fuel takes advantage of how our bodies absorb nutrients. The combination of Tailwind’s fuel, electrolytes, and water has a synergistic effect, allowing the body to absorb more of each. Once in the bloodstream, the glucose in Tailwind fuels muscles directly, allowing athletes to go longer at higher intensities.

The nutritional chart does not specify Glucose/sucrose

You also have to take into consideration that the sugar is high per serving with TW....but you are not taking in any other sugars eating anything else. Take your 7g in G2 and add 2-3 Gu's @7g's each and you have now exceeded that which is in TW. I think this gets overlooked.

With the Gatorade, you're not getting the calories, are you? I haven't used any Gatorade in quite some time... So not 100% sure. That would mean carrying a calorie source, as well? This time of year, on longer rides, I can get away with 100-150 calories per 1.5 hours. In the summer, I'll be closer to 300 per hour. That's a lot of extra weight and complexity to carry around without an all-in-one solution.

Also... The original purpose of Tailwind was not casual workouts. It was designed for ultra endurance runners, who easily burn that much sugar. Hence the reason that I don't use it for shorter rides (under 2 hours) and tailor the dose when conditions change. For longer days, like Temecula, I'll typically burn upwards of 3,000 calories, but only take in 1200 or so. In that case, the sugar intake is actually pretty low.

I'm rambling and typing on my phone...

I always have tried to minimize sugars in my life and definitely during exercise. So for me, I feel that is a lot. Everyone does things differently. I also do not really believe in marketing hype. The proof is the product and a lot of people seem to swear by it.

I'm the exact opposite... I dropped 100 pounds by largely cutting out sugars and carbs in general, except during exercise.

Haven't touched Gu in years. I'd rather have a Snickers if I'm hurting that bad...
I only carry water in my Camelbak. Too many science experiments occurred in my garage, confirming evolution from microbial life.
    If I run bottles it's water and/or a diluted G2 mix.
Bars are a mix of whatever I can get at Costco or Trader Joes.
A sandwich with meat, cheese, and maybe a veggie or two keeps me going on longer rides. Last PCE ride I ate half a new York strip/pepperjack/avocado on a ciabatta roll. Talk about tailwinds!
Works for me. Might or might not work for you.

Look, everyone knows that I am the ultimate authority on what works for epic rides of 10,000 ft. of climbing or more, so here goes...

Starting last February, I now drink a large water bottle of Skratch (1 1/2 scoops) before I ride. Now I drink about half as much water and eat almost no plastic food while I ride. I was able to push past my 3200' barrier without cramping using this approach. Instead of 3 liters of water for a 3 hour ride, I can get by with less than half of that. Tailwind probably works better, but I am stubborn. I like to be different just to be different.

The only one I didn't like so much was the berry... that one reminded me of the overly sweet gut bomb drinks. The lemon and orange are very mild. With my dull taste buds, I wouldn't know which was which in a blind taste test. The naked has almost no flavor...

If you come out Wednesday, I can bring you a single serve of the orange... And maybe a baggie of the green tea to try. I just restocked before Temecula.

I like all the non-caffeinated flavors. I'll mix the flavors. Putting Naked into any of the flavors dulls them down.

I do not use tailwinds. Usually Gatorade in one bottle water in the other. If it's a race I might get some gu or waffle stingers if not just chewy granola bars.
