I am so sorry you were there to witness that. And I am SOOOOOO glad you are here to report it and that you and your family/friends emerged physically ok.

Here they are! I saw these for rent at the Rose Bowl recently.

What do you say we get a small group ride together to see what these things can do on our trails?

Is that an Industrial Grade Basket on the front?

There is a war going on between commuters and the city right now. The City (Los Angeles) wants to choke down vehicle accessibility in effort to promote Metro networks. They want to get rid of cars and have everyone walk, ride bikes, use busses, and mass transportation. Personally, I get it. Not sure I agree with it. Initially it looks to be a new method to control the masses which I am not up for. You know me, hick Mikie out in the sticks and all...

After recently spending six hours driving to and from the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades for a two hour tour and lunch, I am 100% supportive of anything that gets bodies from A to B more efficiently. I haven't driven in LA for a loooong time and figured mid-day driving wouldn't be that bad. Oops, wrong assumption there!
It would have been so nice to have hopped on the Metro Rainbow Plaid Line and taken it all the way there.

Wife and I went there not long ago because she wanted to. Never again.

My solution is uber-simple: I do not go to Los Angeles. Bad enough going to Long Beach every day.

The thing is, I love LA! That's a good title for a song, BTW. But yeah, traffic is really bad. We left the Villa @ 1:30, and didn't get back to Redlands (80 miles) till 5:00.

You can see the stark difference in philosophy at the LA/Orange county line on Interestate 5. OC built freeway lanes with Measure M. It goes from 6 lanes each side in OC to...3 where it hits LA County. Quite the fun bottleneck. :whistling: Of course, if you're coming south out of LA then it opens wide and you go from 6 mph to 60.

LA complains about traffic and then does everything possible to make it worse.

That makes more sense. To me, more public transportation is great, but, I like a city, so.

City Councilman Mike Bonin known on KFI as Bonehead Bonin is in the middle of a recall regarding his election as people are fuming from his reduction of lanes, and plans to work in cohort with Metro to reduce traffic flow to the frustration point that forces people to utilize public transportation.

    First lines:

"South Bay commuters looking to avoid the 405 Freeway have long taken an alternate route through Playa del Rey, passing the coastline and the Ballona Wetlands to reach Santa Monica.

The route is popular — with more than 24,000 vehicles per day — but some residents complained that harried commuters speeding through the neighborhood put pedestrians and children at risk."

Look, at some point, there's only so wide that you can make a freeway when the majority of people are driving 1 person/car in a megalopolis.

I should point out that I was part of that problem (the 405 jam) for a year when I commuted from Costa Mesa to Malibu.

Plus this is a bike website! I'm all for more bike lanes, but then, I also really enjoy commuting to work, and even, gasp! riding a road bike (but generally not on the road because F@ck getting hit by a car).

Hmmmm. No traffic expansion capabilities and no water...
Sounds like it's time for a moratorium on building and adding to a city well over capacity for geography and natural resources. But why would we want to use logic when it comes to California politics?

I would wholeheartedly support such a moratorium. The truly baffling thing to me is the water situation. Traffic is more universal and not Southern California specific.

I'm assuming that money talks when developers are willing to line the pockets in one fashion or the other of City Councilmen and Committees. It's a shame, as we vote these jackwads into office hoping to look after our best interest but I believe that lid has been lifted and has revealed it's all about special interest groups and the mighty dollar.... sad.

Development fees are such a huge part of city budgets, even without corruption/special interests/etc, cities rely on them to cover basic services. HUGE incentive to build, build, build...
