Ok, I am going to violate the thread title in the first post. Here is Danny Hart with a practice run at Fort William. Not WC - just British DH Series, but Ft. Bill is the next stop on the WC, so a great preview.

And yes, he's on wagon wheels.

These helmet/chest views were great, you never see that much of the track with Redbull's coverage. After watching it, you can definitely see how the 29er is perfect for this track.

Why do I get the impression that he rolled into some of the sections faster than he anticipated....maybe not able to take his intended line?

DAMMMMIT J - you keep your filthy, sweaty, skinny-assed cross country riding off of this thread!

OK, I watched some XC last year and it was pretty cool. They even went downhill in spots - and they did it quite well. Especially for being in their underwear, wearing tap shoes and riding on 19 lb bikes with saddles jacked to the sky.

Take a ride with the man who has won 6 of the prior 15 WC races run here at Ft. William. Stretch your wrists and forearms before you start, 'cuz it's a loooooong rough ride.

Well looks like Shark Attack Jack Moir was not as slow as he was in front of Claudio. And it looks like Minnaar was... Minnaar.

(BTW - It's not just a cool nickname for an Aussie, he's actually been bitten by sharks. Twice.)

    Oh and 29ers 1, 2, 3.
A-A-Ron managed 5th in Qualies. And qualies count points.
I hope the rain doesn't ruin the equity like it did at Lourdes. If so, Sam Hill will start third tomorrow as nearly last qualifier and could win if the rains decimate the course for the top riders again. Smart money is still on Minnaar, Gwin or Vergier, but there are so many talented riders, anything can happen! Let's watch - tomorrow 5am RedBull TV.

The Men's race was pretty damn good, who would have thought we would see 29'ers on top and both based loosely on the same VPP platform. It's a shame with Rachel getting hurt, but now the Women's series is wide open now and a bit more exciting.

So how did Gwin lose time? I dont think they showed it.
    .
Who doesnt have a 29er yet? YT?
    .
Intense is a "prototype". Arent they all really prototypes? Or are the carbon ones gonna be production models?

On Gwin's run, they show him coming out of the woods almost at walking speeds, so he must have stalled right before he came into view. And yes, YT does not have a 29er DH bike.

Santa Cruz is producing rear-ends (all that is needed to use 29" wheels) for their race team, and these come from their personal carbon factory in Asia. Intense is producing Moir's bike in Temecula and could go into full production if they see a big enough market, they would just need to hire more Alu welders again. All of these bikes are pretty polished and ready for the market. Trek launched the 29 Session, and I think Mondraker is selling theirs too.

YT and Canyon riders mentioned they do not have a 29er yet.

Gwin stalled in a nothing section for some reason, but I haven't read why yet.

Intense (Jeff Steber specifically) made two of these bikes - one for Jack Moir and one for Dean Lucas. If you look closely it's pretty unrefined and nowhere near production-ready. I think it's cool as hell that a crude looking rig like the Intense 29er - with a completely new suspension layout, damn near won the race.

Jack has been steadily improving over the two years and was frequently hovering around 10th-15th last year. He is looking really strong. I think he was the only one I saw who didn't pull a foot out in the wooded section.

    Go tall guys!!!!

(Minnaar, Peat, Atherton, Payet, Moir - all well over 6' tall).

On a different note I LOVED today's podium.
Greg Minnaar has been a favorite of mine for years. I love his smoooooth, measured style. Some have called him boring to watch, I call it brilliant.
I am stoked on Aaron Gwin, and his ability to find speed. His story is amazing (how he got into DH MtB and how he decimated the field soon after starting).
And I've actually had a conversation with Jack Moir - and he rides an Intense. I am pumped to see that Intense's renewed focus on WC DH is paying off - and not just with one rider.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

Gwin mentions a crash on Instagram account. It explains how he lost 3+ seconds coming out of the woods.

Minnar is such a high level professional. Saw him practice at Bryant Head 2006 and it was obvious how meticulous he was. He's got a real knack from carrying speed through stuff where others do not.

Gwin looked like he got hung up somewhere. He still managed to get third after a fairly costly mistake.

Interestingly the fastest guy down Motorway is on a 27.5.

I'm still not 100% convinced that the 29r is all that much faster. I mean would someone say that Minnaar would have lost if he wasn't on a 29r? He's won there like 7 times now and he wasn't on a 29r for 6 of them.

Hart crashed on his 29er today, so 29ers cause OTB crashes

29ers are faster in a straight line. Minnaar and Moir are tall dudes (as are Atherton, Payet and several more), so the bikes fit them well. That said, I am with you, Greg could have won that on last year's bike no problem. Speculation, conjecture and all the "would've, could've" talk about wheel size will soon disappear. I am thinking big guys will ride 29ers, smaller guys and most women will ride 27.5s and the one who makes the least mistakes, chooses the best lines and has the fitness dialed will emerge at the top step.

I have to admit, Danny Hart looked like a kid borrowing his dad's bike.

Seems like the person that got through the forest section fastest won the race.

What was up with Myriam Nicole? It looked like she couldn't get over the doubles at the bottom. She lost by 10 seconds to Tracy Hannah.
