    I got a Concept2, which is the one used by rowing clubs etc and is considered the best erg. New ones, Model D are ~$1000.
    They last forever, hold value and pretty much all parts are available. Mine is a Model C that I got from Craiglist for $375. $20 in parts and some TLC and it works perfectly. I consider that a good value. Mine is 16+ years old, 'cuz that is when they stopped making the C.

    Water Rower is also considered pretty good.

    Rowing is a good workout, mostly leg drive; but a lot of upper body as well.
