    I'm standing by my bike at a map display, midweek, out near Penitente Canyon CO. My wet gear is splayed about, drying. A rare truck drives by on the dirt road. Otherwise ghostly.

    I know the place is a rock climbing destination. A glassing of the trail map had me assured that nobody comes here to MTB, especially midweek.

    Just then a fair lass on an exotic FS comes rolling up. It was impossible to ignore her shape in that sporty outfit. And those gold hoop earrings pressed beneath her helmet straps. And that honest, humble demeanor.

    She inquires about my deal, did I camp here last night. Then, "so are you one of those super athletic guys...?"

    Ho, man...too many miles, days and nights alone. After she was gone I was not really sure if she had been there at all.
