The Rwanda planning committee posted on Facebook that the 2016 ride will take place on April 30, which is the same day as the Catalina Island Gran Fondo.

I have loved the Rwanda ride the last three years, but Catalina will be my choice for 2016.

The choice is easy......which ride can you do anytime on your own?

Not a problem. You are not doing either anyway...
    You ARE doing Kokopelli...

I like the party atmosphere of the Rwanda ride. It's a fun time... But Catalina is a much better and harder ride.

Faust, I just hope your 2016 doesn't turn out like my 2015...ride conflicts, time conflicts, seemed like nothing went right for getting in an epic.

I'm keeping my eye on Catalina for sure.

You don't have to travel to get in an Epic....we can do one just about any weekend. :sneaky:  ;)

Agreed... They cut a few miles off the end last year, but it was still well worth it... My goal this year will be to not stop for pictures every 10 minutes.

It's an "easy on the body" ride with nothing technical, but there is a boatload of climbing that starts right out of the gate.

Last year, the only boat that left early enough was out of Dana Point.

I just tried it, and it doesn't seem to exist in the system yet that far out...

And as of right now nothing out of Dana Point either. Could be a problem.

That's the system... It's not showing anything that far out. There will be boats available... I've never had an issue getting over.

Since I work about a half mile from Catalina Landing in Long Beach, I think I'll mosey over there on Monday.

Very good... Let me know what you learn. Last year, they had an early boat out of Dana that worked well. It ran behind with rough water, and I still had plenty of time to register and get set up.

Oh you've gotta be kidding me. Catalina is one of my few tentpole rides/races this year. I'm REALLY bummed that they might be on the same day right now.

I hadn't seen the Catalina ride/dates posted yet, do you have a link to that?

The shoair page hasn't been updated since the 2015 event, but the date appears on several of the island websites.

From the limited info available from Mr. Google, it looks like a 10 am start time on Catalina...is this right???

Yes... It was 10 last year. That gives plenty of time for people who take the boat over on the day of the event. I had plenty of time to get a locker, and get settled. I also had plenty of time after the race to ride around town and have a burrito before the boat back.

Rwanda registration opens tomorrow, December 15. I registered very early last year and got one of the coveted low numbers... 24, I think.

I'll be doing neither. I've done Rwanda a few times and would like to ride on Catalina.
But, I'm doing a Tour de Cure century for diabetes in Napa on May 1.
If I don't take the wife wine tasting in May, I'm doomed.

They have changed the 25 mile route for Rwanda... It's basically my local quickie route. RSM start- Live Oak- through RSM to Chiquita Ridge- Tijeras Creek- Waterworks- Arroyo
No word on the 50 mile route yet.

I see they are also including the Vista downhill in O'Neill... Not from the highest point, but from the cheater entrance at base of Vista. Still... That should be interesting for some of the beginners that the 25 attracts.
