I have not been riding or posting much this past year or so, as 2022 was not a good year for me in regards to my riding health.
    1. First, I broke my left radial bone near my elbow in May on a stupid curb-hopping crash during one of Crazy Bears Tuesday night rides, being in my 60's now, it took almost 16 weeks for the darn thing to heal. (@DangerDirtyD saw the crash, and it was a total dumb move by me!!)
    2. Then, while I was recouping and waiting to begin riding again, my right hip started hurting worse and worse, to the point where I could hardly walk, or sleep comfortably at night. After multiple x-rays and MRI's, it looks like severe ostio-arthritis has caught up with me and my hip cartilage is shot. Diagnosis is for a complete hip replacement surgery, currently scheduled for April. Also awaiting a 2nd opinion appointment to make sure I am doing the right thing.
So, here's to hoping I can get my hip/leg working again in 2023 and I can get back on the bike and enjoy the comradery here with you all!!

    Cheers Mates!!

Hey Rick! I come here when I can’t ride but need to be around it, which is why I’m here all the time. I hope you mend 100% and can be back on the bike by next November for your annual Birthday ride (probably not SART straight outta rehab, but maybe a Turnbull or Bonelli rendezvous). See if you can find out who the Orthopedist(s) were for Bob Bryan and Andy Murray since they had hip replacement and were able to continue pro tennis on hard courts after rehab. Good luck, and lemme know if you are interested in being a shuttle driver in the interim.

Dang Rick sorry to hear about all this. I knew about the arm but not the hip issues. A wise man(and member who used to frequent here) told me it's better to live life and pay the consequences than walk around in bubble wrap and have no good stories to tell. You're a mountain biker and you're tough so my guess is you will back in the saddle in due time. Like others have said don't let not being able to ride stop you from frequenting and talking smack here. Hang in there bud, you are on of those dudes that's really fun to ride with.

I know there is a MASSIVE age gap, but...

My uncle had a total hip replacement after he was hit by a truck. I saw the x-rays, his hip was shattered.

Dr said he would be able to walk with a cane, but probably never ride again.

6 months later he rode a century (roadie). 20 years later he is still a regular skier. He is in his 60's now, though you wouldn't know it looking at him.

So a total hip isn't a game ender, could be a game changer.

I had a friend who had his hip replaced in his late 40s. It transformed him from a hobbling cripple to a fully functional and fully capable person. He was overjoyed with the result.

Great to hear from you all, and your right, this is an awesome group and I consider you all personal friends, no reason for me to go silent now. Also, your words are very encouraging to me to get back on the bike and post some rides with you all. I have a stretch goal to do Kokopelli in 2024, lets see if I can pull it off, and continue talking Sh!t with my friends here!! Happy New Years to you all.

If it makes you feel any better, your chances of doing Kokopelli in 2024 are better than mine.

Definitely get 2nd opinion for surgery. Total hip surgeries are so routine now. Hope to ride with you again, maybe with a new hip for 23'!

I'm coming off two knee replacements with 14 months between the surgeries. I used Dr. Steven Barnett at Hoag Orthopedics in Irvine. He is a knee and hip specialist and I would highly recommend him for a 2nd opinion. Dr. Gorab at Hoag was used by two business acquaintances and they were both very happy too.

I chose Dr. Barnett as he was an active cyclist and understood my desire to return to riding. He also came recommended to by two friends, one a rider and one a skier. He helped guide me through all the hurdles and choices with no-fluff answers.

You will no doubt have hundreds of questions. I'll be happy to assist.

Oh, most importantly - I'm am 100% happy with my two outcomes. No pain, excellent stability and I'm free to pursue all activities. In my case, low impact is key. That and trying to regain better strength & range of motion after 20+ years of limping.

@OTHRider my 2nd opinion appointment is with Dr. Nader Nassif out of the Hoag Orthopedics in Irvine. He also comes highly recommended from a co-worker who had both hips replaced by Dr. Nassif. Sounds like we are in the same ballpark!

    Good Luck!!!

Buddy of mine got a hip replacement... Went back too skiing the following year... Biking should be no issue hopefully.

Frazier Smith is noted for his KROQ-FM simulcasts of the 1978 World Series. He coined the phrase "Too hip, gotta go!" while at KLOS.[3]

Well chit Rick, I hope all works out. Really miss riding with you. Not sure if I told you. My hip was giving me fits. Could not sleep on my side, sitting in a chair hurt. Interestingly pedaling did not bother it but when I went downhill in the attack position it hurt. This was a couple years ago. My Chiro taught me the seated Piera forma , fig 4 seated stretch. It targeted the exact spot where the discomfort was. 1 set of 3 for 1 minute hold 5 times a day and in a week pain was gone. I do a couple sets before and after every ride now. No pain. I will send it too you. I also learned how to ride down hilll with the opposite foot forward. It was weird at first but now I can rotate dh foot positions depending on which side of me the hillside is on. Pretty cool huh!
Please stay in touch. The best to you.

we must have grown up at the same time @bvader, that's exactly where I borrowed that phrase from! Used to listen to that nut Frazier Smith all the time! I had forgotten about his World Series spoof!

Just an update for the group, my hip replacement surgery went extremely well, with no issues and today is 4 weeks from my surgery date. I am getting around very good and have been back at work for two weeks now and no longer need my cane to walk. PT is progressing and I honestly think I will be back on my bike by the end of April/early May. Just throwing it out there now that I would like to target Friday Nov. 17 for my 11th annual B-Day ride, would love to celebrate my health and blessings with as many of you as possible.

The x-rays and MRI's seem to show that the cartilage in my left hip is in ok condition, not sure why my right was so far gone? but hopefully I can continue with my OEM left hip for quite a few more years?

I was given the green light last Thursday (4/27) by my doctor to resume full activities, with the only caveat to let pain be my guide as to how hard to push it.
However, I did not get on the bike this weekend, but worked in the yard planting the garden and cleaning things up, that beat me up pretty much and I am feeling it today! :gag:
