My Tire source has left California.
I went to Jenson and looked at the 3 Maxxis 29'er Recon's they had available and went into sticker shock.
Where is everyone going to get their best deals on tires these days...?

Easy to jump on price. I noticed this Site offers a 60tpi EXO/TR (even though they show a pic of a 120 TPI Maxxis).

They are out of Spain and it would appear for 1 Tire it would be $15 bucks shipping. Still not bad.

    EDIT:
Ouch! Unless I want it early...

I've used Jenson a lot in the past. I'll usually buy a few when I see my choices on sale. Backcountry/competitive cyclist occasionally have good deals too. Additional savings by using ActiveJunky so keep an eye on that. I got 12% back at Backcountry last time I ordered.

Honestly, I'm not partial to any one in particular. I'll shop them all and go with the best price. Active Junky helps alot with Backcountry.....usually Jenson is only like 3%.

Biketiresdirect has a free points system for returning customers. That added with sale prices and free shipping makes them usually pretty good.

For Bontrager Tires, it is Trek and only Trek, but around the holidays they always have sales which help out nicely.

I usually find my best deals between amazon and biketiresdirect. Just picked these up from biketires, plus had $12 in points to use

I’m a little concerned with the sparse thread on Aspen. And the Rekon race is fairly shallow knobs. We’ll find out once I hit the dirt

I went BikeTiresDirect, a little ouchy on price but gets the ball rolling on dollar credits. I got the Tan Walls and will put those on my DV9. Swap the DV9 blackwalls to my Hightower which is back online.

If you're not in a hurry, look at Euro sources. We usually do a group buy of tires which helps on the shipping fee. Last time we bought (late May), most Maxxis stuff was about $40 a tire, Conti's were low 30's and a Trek SE4 was $51.

Just don't try to ride them like an enduro tire and you'll be fine. Try to keep the bike more upright in the turns using body English.

I assume the tire on the right in the pic is the front based on the "L" Blocks. Still seems to have the Maxxis traditional cornering blocks, but may have better roll due to the light center blocks.

@Mikie, I bought those same tires (except not sure on the 2.6) for the same price at Squeaky Wheel. But, looks like you've already ordered.

I have gotten so used to not going to bike shops anymore that it would be great if prices started aligning so I felt confident returning to them.

As you know that is probably never going to happen. I spent $35 for XT brake pads at the Block the other day. I needed them and couldn't wait after our Tehachapi ride so had to pay the price. But, was surprised at Squeaky Wheel when I saw the tires for that price.

Keep in mind that Maxxis offers some of the tires in the 3C compound and the Dual Compound....the DC tires are generally cheaper. I've found that shops have the DC versions around $60, but the 3C versions are pushing $75.

Just something to keep an eye out for.

I don’t doubt that at all, what I wonder is how many races those pro sponsored riders use the same tires on. I’m sure one or two races and they slap on a new pair.

I put the Rekon Race through about 800 miles of all kinds of trails....should have replaced it after 775 miles but thought I had another ride left in it.

What did you ride for the Goat Trails the other night? I was on 2.35 Schwalbe Nobby Nic rear/Maxxis 2.5DHF Front and had nothing left to desire.

Correct the Aspen is a rear specific tire, I don’t think it would give much confidence as a front. I’m thinking of changing my choice of tires and putting Rekon race in rear and Rekon up front. Currently have Conti Cross king up front and Race king in rear both 2.2 . They work well for being a shallow thread 2.2 tire. But since going to a 120mm xc- ish bike I’ve been missing the confidence of a more aggressive tire.

I'm a Schwalbe guy, and these German mail order places can't be beat for their prices on them. The average about $35 a tire shipped when you buy four or more at a time. Shipping time has got a little bad, and can be up to 3 weeks to make it through customs. So plan ahead if you go this route.

My XC bike has Aspens front and rear. Full high level pros or the right course, they are fast. As soon as I remember and get time, I am going to put an Ikon back up front. I'll save that Aspen for the rear again.

But they wear out so quick, you have to order 2x as many...so cost is a wash. :cautious:
