Maybe no more weather for awhile?

This is more a geography question than weather. Wife took these pics near our house in Mission Viejo (roughly La Paz and Olympiad) looking northeast-ish. So the ridge in the foreground to the right of Santiago peak goes down low and has no snow on it. Behind it in the background is another ridge completely white with snow, more so than Saddleback. Is that ridge in the Santa Anas, or is it actually the San Bernadinos (San Gorgonio and 10k ft ridge)? They look very close, but the San Berdos are 40+ miles away from the Santa Anas. What are we seeing in this pic? TIA

Could it be San Jacinto or San Gorgonio? Those seem too far away. Optical illusion for sure!

Thats the Holy Fire scar. snow sticks more and lingers longer on the bare dirt of fire scars than to vegetation (which retains more heat.) snowcovrd peak in middle in 2d pic is trabuco peak. Foreground is bell ridge.

Thanks Gary! And thanks Herz! Had a discussion with some fellows at the dog park this morning, they swore it was the San Berdos. Just didn't seem that far away, but very deceptive.

Yeah definitely! It’s been a while since we got anything 3 inches plus. If we didn’t have The melts in between we would have about two feet of snow easily.

Have about 3/4 of a chord left. We went down last night to Bakersfield and bought a new wood burning stove. This one will handle up to 3500 sq ft. The one we have covers 2000 sq ft and is not cutting it. Surprisingly, our house is only 1750 sq ft. That should tell you somewhat just how cold it’s been here. We have been averaging 38 degrees on a 24 hour basis. Down in the low 20’s last night again.

Mammoth is at 198” of snow for just the month of February. With more on the way it looks like they will top 200” before the month ends. More snow predicted for this weekend.
I took this picture by Horshoe Lake on August 2, 2017. That was a big snow year too.
As someone was saying the other day, the bike park will late opening this year. In the past they have had a pass so you could ski the upper slopes and ride the lower trails on your bike.139DCE4A-C766-4313-AB8C-D0959879AAC9.jpeg

Late to the party... Old Grayback aka San Gorgonio back there with Jepson, etc on its left and Ten Thousand Foot Ridge to the right. Dave, that's a great shot with the range looking so close. Good air quality. TFPU!

Respectfully, you're incorrect. Santiago Peak is the summit of the SAs, and if anyplace in CNF is white/whitest, it will be there. A bunch of the San G range is above 10k'. That's why it's completely white out there. If you could see down to 5600' (summit el of Santiago) on the San G range in that shot, it would have the same sparse coverage Santiago does. The top of the range is above treeline, which tends to make terrain appear to have more snow coverage. But the dense chaparral on the S/W side (shown) is nearly fully covered.

I've topped out nearly every 10k+' peak in the San G range, including in winter, so am somewhat familiar with the area. That distinct pyramid-looking peak on the left is San Bernardino Peak. There is a historic relic up there near the summit, some refractory equipment used for the initial surveying of the inland empire. Highway 38 is just down and left of it. Town of Forest Falls is just below the deep drainage in the center of the range. There is actually off-piste sliding down the back of Jepson in conditions like this. If that area is not still closed from the fire, people have undoubtedly been going in from the road above Heart Bar for those goods.

Edit: Nice shot for orientation, aerial taken from approximately above San Bernardino Peak. The red arrow is the direction the camera is pointing that took the shot knuckles posted.

    Ouch, babe!

BTW: Momyer "Trail" caution...unmaintained! The weiz and I romped up that thing, could barely follow it. Coming down we lost it right away and started bombing down that massive, nettle-choked drainage. Had to surf down some pretty steep, loose aspects and got lucky we didn't cliff out. Any other person than the weez would have been traumatized, bless her... :inlove::geek:

    Back to the weather? :speechless:

That is absolutely the Santa Ana’s in Dave’s pic and not gorgonio. The fire scar holds the snow longer and looks whiter than Santiago peak. Go into google earth, position yourself at la Paz and Olympiad, see if you can see gorgonio. It is never visible from that location, the sa’s are in the way. You cannot see individual trees in a mountain 50 miles away. Heck you can even see main divide road.
