Exactly....after the prediction a few years back about the MEGA winter/deluge we were going to have, repeated repeatedly by every source on the planet, they lost all credibility with me. What's going to happen or not happen is out of our control so I'll just roll with whatever comes my way.

I am just happy that Sh!t is over for now. It looks like at least half a month of dry and sunny ... and the inevitable sumner fires as a result of all the growth ...

Anyone has any best guesses what trails will be open & rideable by tomorrow/Sunday morning in OC? Was tentatively thinking of STT starting from Cooks, assuming Whiting itself is off the cards.

STT will be fine....it was probably fine today.

Whiting??? Tough call. OC Parks is still showing it closed for wet and muddy conditions.

    Thanks!

On STT, we never went beyond the flag. Was thinking of continuing to Old Camp, a place lot of people seem to go to. Stupid question, but is it just following the same trail and at what point are you actually in Old Camp. Is it a campground or just a larger open space? Thanks again

Yes, just follow the same trail. You can't really get lost. You will eventually come to an open space where you can go straight or up a fire break to the right. If you go straight there is a downhill to the actual Old Camp. I think most people just stop at the clearing and then turn around, but it is cool to go down to Old Camp at least once I guess.

I've been to the actual old camp a couple times . Picked up a couple ticks each time down there so no longer do that final down hill.

I got caught in a swarm of mosquitoes the last time I went down there, and it was no fun doing the climb back out because I could not outrun them. :gag: I turn around at the clearing now.

Wait wait wait - there is one intersection that some people blow (and I too have gone the wrong way). Cadillac road/trail intersects the STT halfway between the Luge flag and the Old Camp clearing. There's usually a huge mud puddle up there near that intersection. If you are heading up to Old Camp, you pass the mud puddle, then head left at the intersection. If you are coming back, you head right (then back around the mud puddle lake).

More like a ginormous mud puddle. It was funny watching two guys on eBikes pushing their heavy bikes through it. I just hoisted mine over my head and walked the edge.

Anyway, there are about five totally unavoidable mud puddles on the way to Old Camp.

That sucker is bigger than ever!

I recall just a few years ago when that area was not very wide. Then the 4x's started showing up and just trashed it.

So dumb question, were the e-bikers walking their bikes because the water will/might short out their bikes? Surely that's not the way they were designed as it would be a monumental gaffe.

Thanks again for the tip. We didnt make it all the way to Old Camp though, my wife had neck pain. We loved the extra climb though. STT is nice, you look down on the county one way (really clear skies today) and the other way it is wildnerness. we went down a perfect Luge thereafter (thanks for the trailwork!), together with 200 other people today :Roflmaoo_O

Like Obsidian says above, most people stop at the clearing at the top. You'll know it when you come to it. If you descend into the actual Old Camp, there isn't much there... Mr. Scissors and I were there in June, and we make the STT to Old Camp sometimes on the Wednesday night ride. It's fun coming back down from Old Camp to the Luge... Even better at night. If you start at Cooks, it's about 9.5 miles to the clearing at the top of Old Camp.

It's also the exit for Joplin Trail...

They were probably just trying to keep mud off their bikes, same as I was. It would be hilarious to see one short out though. Well maybe not, that could start a wild fire, LOL.

Fyi I just looked at ocparks.com and LCWP & Whiting Ranch are open. I suspect the ALERT link on that site will show more openings today

Happy riding for all the other lucky ones that have a day off
