Some good reads if you are bored and want to embrace the whole "outbreak" theme:

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
A non-fiction account of a 1989 event in Reston, VA, when an ebola virus almost breaks out of an animal research lab.

The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
The book that launched Crichton's career before Jurassic Park. Satellite recovery goes bad :)

    The Stand by Steven King
Military bio-weapon breaks out and takes down society as we know it.

I've read the Andromeda Strain and The Stand. The Stand was better. I'll have to look up the Hot Zone.

Bambi is a boy. Why don't we see any boys named Bambi? Only strippers?

I'm all about some recommendations, or just scoop on what folks are reading. Just finishing up an oldie but a goodie, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. It's pretty riveting if you haven't read it. Also just finished Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell. If you like social commentary stuff, it's really excellent. I listened to the audio version of this one, and it has a lot of additional content/features. Really well done.

Into Thin Air is a must read for anyone wondering! I’ve read most of the high altitude climbing books, and Krakauer really did it right
You might like Endurance, a great read about Shackleton’s arctic expedition. Also a good ol classic, The Outsiders:thumbsup:

Read it as a youngster (may have read all his and EAP's books) and loved it.

Another good one is "The Marching Morons," by C. M. Kornbluth. Written 70 years ago but damned if the writer didn't nail today's idiocy.

Here's a real page turner that I read in my Western Civ class in college. Oooof...

    a distant mirror.png

    Buy it here.

800 pages of sheer pain - in so many ways, including tortured English masquerading as scholarly writing.

For any Flea/RHCP fans...definitely read "Acid for the Children".....great bio of Flea's life right up until the formation of RHCP. He's a very thoughtful, sensitive, introspective guy despite the hard punk outer casing!
