So I saw a guy and (his wife?) at Tapia a coupla weeks back , both on E Bikes.
    .
Did someone recently donate their IMBT jersey to charity? Because this guy had an IMTB jersey on...... I'm sure Mikie would have been
thrilled to have an E Biker flying the colors!

Your post here contradicts this quote of yours from earlier in the conversation.

"I will no sooner ride a motorized bicycle for recreation than I will be winched up a cliff once I’m unable or unwilling to try anymore. I’ll just stop doing it. Happily."

Because with the aid of a motor, your willpower and ability can be restored. That goes hand and hand with your quote from above here, "adjust and continue".

Dude, you are trolling at this point. A motor will never replace willpower. Restore ability? An odd way to think about it, but it says more about you than it does anything else. Happy Saturday... :)

If ebikes are legalized in OC Parks, there’s a KTM e-ride in my future.

It’s not really a motor, you know. It’s a chainless DH bike with just a little assist. I’m almost 50, and pedaling is hard. I’m living my truth and the haters can take a hike!

No contradiction in @mike 's logic at all. I interpreted him to basically say, "if I can't do it any more (for physical reasons) I won't. I will do something else. I will not resort to motors or winches to assist me."

He is a purist, an idealist and perhaps a masochist. (And that's a compliment, mi amigo).

Ahhhh - it's one of the strange twists of language that yearbook developers have to contend with. It's not Boy's Soccer, or Boys' Soccer - it's Boys Soccer - Soccer doesn't belong to the boys. "Boys" is an adjective. My intention was the same with the thread title. On the flipside, one could argue that the thread belongs to the E-Bike Lovers - in which case the apostrophe would be after the s.

My apologies to any of you's who were thrown of by my lack of apostrophising!

Cue @Runs with Scissors to correct me!

I've been wondering all along when we will see the first forest fire that was started by a malfunctioning e-bike battery meltdown. It's sure to happen, eventually.

The one thing people need to remember with e-bikes is that you are going to burn fewer calories; in most cases - FAR fewer than you would just riding a bike. The averages being batted around are somewhere around 20-30% of what you burn riding a regular bike... though it depends on what power mode you are using, and for how long. E-bikers tend to use their power assist the most when, you guessed it, they are on steep inclines or on hills - and these are the very features that require mountain bikers to burn up all those cals.

So when I was passed by an e-legal-biker this morning on Harding Truck Trail, I was somewhat consoled when I thought that he would have to bike 4x as long to burn as many calories as I was going to burn on my ride :) That is, of course, assuming his battery would last for eight hours of biking in the mountains.

I believe the calorie expenditure deficit is for similar speed...I think if you keep the same effort you were using on a non moped, you would burn similar calories, just go faster/longer. Use it in conjunction with a heart rate monitor, and you could burn similar amounts but ride significantly more. Theoretically of course, the old fashioned way is my preferred method....

If people on an e-bike are trying to burn as many cals as on a mountain bike... why don't they just mountain bike? Instead you are suggesting that they ride an e-bike, but have to go 4x as fast or 4x as far in order to burn the same cals... so where's the advantage?

The ADVANTAGE is going the same distance for 20% the energy, or perhaps twice as far, for 40% the energy. That's why people are getting e-bikes. They aren't getting them just so they have to work harder and ride farther to burn the same cals... that would be nonsensical.

When I ride Aliso Creek Trail, I average 17 mph for my normal ride. A Class I e-bike will not assist past 20mph. So you better be prepared to do my circuit four times in order to burn the cals.

I don’t doubt that many are doing exactly what you say.

I am merely suggesting it could be used by those of us already motivated by exercise as a means unto itself to still get a great workout but get more miles/laps/downhills in, especially if chronically pressed for time.

With respect to the Aliso Creek ride, I’m not sure what the stats are on that one, but most MTB rides involve significant uphills, which is where the vast majority of cals are expended...the potential difference between the max speed of 20mph and average climb speed on a regular MTB is much greater than looking at the average for the ride. Hence, the four laps would not be necessarily required to burn the same cals, depending on the hammering on the climbs. Of course, ripping the uphills raises even more issues....

That said, i suspect it is extremely unlikely that many of those trying out ebikes are now getting significantly more exercise than they would without ebikes. (Hence my mantra in my first post). We are a unique breed...the majority of people don’t see the pleasure in pain and glory of endorphins like we do.

I still get/appreciate all the negatives/drawbacks about ebikes as well...just addressing this isolated point from my perspective....
