So @horsebikerider bought her Tallboy 3 back in late 2016. She took a chance and ordered the Yellow frame. Turned out to be a really sharp color. She made a wise choice.

Fast forward 3.5 years and the yellow isn’t as great as it used to be.

time for a change. However a new bike isn’t in the cards at this point.

If it were aluminum I would have just sent it over to @H2oChick and had her strip it and powder coat it. No such luck with Carbon.

so I set out to research what it would take to recite her frame. Watched some YouTube videos....seems easy enough.

well last week I started gathering my supplies and a keen sense of adventure.

firstbi has to completely disassemble the bike. No big deal.

Following the instructions from one of the you tubers, start off with 400 grit wet sanding. So I started on the rear end. Right away it was clear this was gonna take a while.

Sections of the frame have in order: clear coat, sea foam blue, black, yellow, primer. Most of the frame only had 3-4 coats.

the clear coat is tough...really tough. I finally broke down and picked up some 320 grit paper.

the directions said to take all the old color off for best results. So I spent a few days sanding....and sanding....and sanding some more.

I finally got all the yellow off. I did leave some of the original primer on....figured I would be sanding the new primer when I apply. The spots around the cable attachments I’m not too worried about since the really don’t see any abuse.

I finished up with a wet sand of 600 grit followed by 800 grit. It was smooth. And it only took about 20hrs to get there.

so I dug in for the front triangle. Figured it might be easier since the tubes are flatter and straight. Ran into the same problems with the multiple coats of paint and clear coat.

After another 20 hrs of sanding I decided that removing all the old color want completely necessary as I was watching a few other you tubers who paint bikes. With 2 or 3 coats of primer, followed by 2 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear coat, it should be pretty durable.

so I went forth removing the black, sea foam, and dark yellows as much as possible. But I wasn’t going down to bare frame.

    E9CF0FAE-3A04-4DAF-A682-F85A4AE3B226.jpeg

I followed up not with 600 and 800 grit as well. She was smooth.

next up was taping up all the spots that didn’t require paint. Easier said than done. About 2 hrs later she was ready for something to added instead of removed.

I did a grey primer..it now has 3 coats on it. I’ll let it dry over night and sand it tomorrow before prepping for color and decals.

so this is where I’m at.

for anybody wondering, I only sanded the paint/primer and not the carbon. Wet sanding kept the dust down.

Suz picked out a cool color combo, can’t wait to see how it turns out.

    To be continued.....

Conversely, you could have just dragged it through Blackstar mud... that paint would have been gone in ten minutes!

@mtnbikej 's Mountain Machine Rebuilders I am looking for some pricing to bring life back into my OGHT. Can you provide a quote for full suspension service, wheels overhaul, brake bleed w/ new pads, new tires w/ sealant and tape, new bb, and your newly offered paint service (we can keep original color). Make sure to include lead times as well. Thx. oh yeah... a new headset too.:)

When I was 15, I spent every summer afternoon sanding a '69 Ford LTD. My grandfather promised it to me when I turned 16. My brother ended up getting the car after I did all of the work. I haven't touched a piece of sandpaper since. Kudos to you for taking on such a project.
