Teach your wife to MTB they said, it'll be fun...

Like many people, my wife decided to take up mountain bike riding in 2020. It had been going great honestly... she has been enjoying it, and was improving steadily. Well, as luck would have it, her first beginner to intermediate transition crash, ended up with her in the ER.

We were just wrapping up a great ride at whiting where she had some great breakthroughs on carrying speed through corners and bike/body separation. We were cruising back to the car (parked at kaiser) after our second lap and 3/4 of a mile from car on serrano creek fire road she had a crash.

We were about 100 yards before the turn off to live oak single track. She took her hand off the handlebars to adjust her glasses, hit a patch of sand and went down hard bracing her fall with her hand. I was right next to her when it happened, it was a pretty minor crash, but she ended up basically punching the ground and putting all of her weight in her tiny little hand.

Result, 3 spiral fractured metatarsals which would require surgery. Surgery happened 1.5 weeks ago now. 16 screws, 3 plates and some wire and her hand now has more titanium then all of the bikes in the garage. She's healing well, and now starts the PT which will be painful.

All in all, she's wanting to get back on the bike, at least for now. She's got the right attitude that her riding was on point, she just had a stupid crash in a moment of lack of concentration. time will tell if she ends up getting back to her progression and enjoying it... hopefully she does.

Falls happen...the little ones like this are more frustrating than anything.

Hope she heals quickly.....and don't forget to remind her, dudes dig scars.

Wow, that damage was substantial. Great that she still wants to ride.

 

Sorry to read that, Erik... But it sounds like she has a great attitude about it and will get back out there.

Sorry that happened to her Ebruner but what is really cool is that you both enjoy the same outdoor activities. Hopefully she heals fast!

 

In 2016, I took my wife to FB to choose a bike and get fitted. The assklown salesman took her on a fitting romp in the parking lot during which time he coached her to jump parking blocks. She ended shattering her ankle.

I'm also a part of the Spiral Fracture club and gotta make a mental note to crash on the left being that I'm right dominant and it was my ankle. Kudos to my wife for being the patient chauffeur, lol!

 

Stationary recumbent. It's like separate bedrooms for mountain bikers. And she doesn't usually fall off and cry.

 

Yikes bummer that she went down but great that she’s ready to get after it again. I don’t do well when my wife, kid or dogs are banged up. I would rather endure the pain myself than see them hurting and me being a caretaker.

 

This is amazing!

My worst crashes were in mundane situations. Perhaps that's true of many of us. The fact that she's willing to get back to it is fantastic!

I would share with her this thread and tell her we are so proud of her for taking on mountain biking and that she is still in it… to win it!
