Stolen Santa cruz

Saw this in the Laguna beach independent blotter. Thieves cut a cable and stole a $7500 Santa Cruz bike locked in a rear parking lot. 200 block Thalia street. 1 pm wed may 10.
Yikes.

 

Saw something similar in StuNews Laguna. They reported two bikes, both black and orange, valued at $10,000 stolen from a South Laguna business on PCH. Can't think where that might be. Not a bike shop.

 

Damn, locking up bikes that cost that much with a cable lock... I use a cable to lock my bikes to objects that I can see, I just need enough time to catch up to the thief.

 

I never leave my bike in Laguna where my eyes cannot see it. Ever. Shame!

A good bike is locked between my thighs, stashed inside my truck or house, or at the bike shop. Otherwise, I really don't expect to see it again.

With the road bikes, we used to slip the chain off the chainring and shove a little block (on a cord) in the front lever to lock up the front wheel when running into a 7/11 for cokes, cherry pies and snickers bars, but that was a crapshoot at best.

 

Would most auto insurance cover the loss in this case, Right?

I lock my bike to the bed of my truck most of the time, but I know that if someone really wants it, the 8mm cable will not stop him.
I always assume that the insurance co. will take care of me if it happened (minus the detectable). I'm I way off base?






Should I ask my insurance this asking question?

 

Homeowners or renters would. Auto wouldn't, I learned that the hard way.

 

My understanding is that auto insurance covers the automobile....not the contents.

You home owners insurance should cover items lost, stolen or damaged.

Worst feeling in the world to have your things stolen. Jennifer and I have $20K coverage through AAA for $59 a year. It is specifically for our bicycles. For us it is a great value for peace of mind.

 

Do you have any details on the policy you can share, such as deductibles, limitations etc? I hadn't heard AAA had something like this. Do you know if you have to have homeowners insurance with them to get the bike insurance?

I had my renter's insurance cancelled after I had a couple claims. One was for stuff stolen out of my truck. The second was a stolen bike. Before making the second claim I asked if proceeding with it would affect my rates - insurance co said no. Which was technically true, they didn't change my rates they just declined to renew my policy. Having bikes on a separate policy might be the way to go if it is reported separately from renters/homeowners if you have a claim. It was hard to find coverage with 2 claims in 5 years; with 3, almost no one will cover you.

 

True that @UPSed . It is such a personal violation... you never really forget it.

 

@evdog without looking it up it is an add-on to our renters insurance. I believe the ductable is only $500.

 

If I go anywhere and my bike is with me, it goes inside the cab of my truck. Otherwise I use tie down straps and it's not out of my site. The tweakers in Oildale are pretty good at stealing bikes.

 

No. LBC is on Thalia in mid Laguna. They have had a couple of recent break ins and had a few Intense stolen.

 

What my post refernced, 200 block thalia, could be laguna cyclery, its 240 thalia.

Thanks. I think end of this year when my current policy is up for renewal I will be past 5 years since the last claim, so it will be time to get some new quotes. AAA is on the list, and as much as I am still pissed off at State Farm they were great to deal with aside from the dropping my coverage part.

 

AAA is da kine. We have it for auto and life insurance and with the increasing theft and burglary crimes, I am seriously considering renter's ins, too.

They have been fantastic with all auto accident claims made.

 

When our GMC Yukon was broken into at the Irvine Spectrum (along with 14 other GM vehicles of similar years), the homeowners covered my camera and a bunch of stuff my wife had stolen.
