I've been out of it for quite awhile due to multiple body ailments, mainly motocross related lol, and starting to get back to it.

Now, the age old question...rear tire choice? My go to SS rear for ages has been The Captain, and has given up the ghost, puking Stan's out of the sidewalls with every ride. I've experienced this problem before, and now I'm too old and cranky to deal with it. Thankfully they don't make that tire anymore.

Maxxis is preferred. 29er, 2.0 to 2.2, small tire guy.

    Thanks for the input.

    Maxxis has lots of options.

don’t pigeon hole yourself into small tires.

    Aspen 2.1 2.25 or 2.4
    Rekon Race 2.25 or 2.35
    Ikon 2.2 or 2.35
    Ardent Race 2.25 or 2.35
    Forekaster 2.2 or 2.3

from there you jump to the Rekon 2.25 or 2.4 However I don’t recommend the 2.25

These are all good options. Fast rolling, good traction, lighter weights.

bigger volume tires are not the disadvantage they used to be. Lots of WC XC racers are now running 2.4’s

I love the Rekon for how fast it spins up and the grip is great. For me, it's an Ikon on steroids. I run the 2.4 version, though... I imagine the 2.2 is even faster, but that's a little narrow for me.

Ikon is more durable the Rekon. I'm not sure why. the 2.35 is a great rear tire.

I can't imagine you, J, recommending an Ardent. :geek: Surely you mean Ardent Race? If not...

Ardent Race 2.35 is a fast roller and not hopeless traction-wise. Durable also. I just put it on the back of my SS, replacing an Aggressor. A little bodyweight adjustment for standing pedaling traction, good to go. I dented a DTS m1900 30 rim while riding an Ardent Race carelessly on my FS – the tire shrugged it off.

Yes, I meant Ardent Race.....but the normal Ardent isn’t a bad rear tire.

I was an ikon front and rear guy for a long time 2.35 and 2.25. I stepped up my game out here in the rocks with a 2.4 rekon and 2.35 ikon. It has helped me corner in the loose and did not notice much in the weight. The extra volume is nice for the big rock hits that are going to happen in the desert.

Unlike the other boys I've had zero problems running 2.25 Rekons front and rear for a year and a half now.

It is the gold standard of XC tires.
Most fast tires are measured against it.

Ikon 2.0 Non snake skin. It's their lightest version. I always refer to maxxis tire chart to get the correct part number for the specific version of tire I'm searching. It's not too great a tire beyond being light and fast. It has so little body it's kinda squishy unless it's got a bit too much air in it then the ride suffers. It's not too fragile or I've been lucky although I wouldn't ride it through a rock garden either.
