Some of my bikey-friends from as far as San Diego and Walnut Creek have been planning to meet up at June Mtn. area and ride the trails and roads back there. It's kind of a half-way spot, with similar drive-times for everyone. All systems were go, then a pretty legit cold-front came up on the forecast. Temps kept dropping, precipitation kept increasing. We decided that even if we could gear up to go up there, riding in those conditions wouldn't be worth it. Rather than ditch the trip altogether, we quickly threw something together and met up Kernville.

After lunch @ KRB (beer was great, burger was average) we headed up to camp at Greenhorn Mountain Park by Alta Sierra. GREAT off the track campground... $18 a night with views, real toilets, and unlimited hot water showers! Highly recommended! We were too late to do Just Outstanding, so settled on the Unal Trail plus some bonus fire road action. A lot of fun and 6,000 ft acclimation!

Hung out at the camp, bundled up, and enjoyed the fire with free wood from the hosts (seriously, this is a great campground!)

Cold night, and a VERY wet morning the next day. It wasn't raining, but we were at the saddle, and the clouds were rolling right through us. The moisture was hitting the trees and dripping enough to feel like rain! Count the layers, there are five!

It was cold, and we huddled under a tarp and had a good breakfast nonetheless! Breakfast was okay....

I suggested going down to Keyesville and riding there, which was a brilliant idea. Twenty degrees warmer, blue skies, and open trails. It was a blast!

Lunch back at KRB (lunch on the deck out back, their menu might be better, beer is great either place!) and then more smack-talk 'round the fire, and devouring a cheese plate!

Cold-ass morning, so we got up out of there quick-like. Had a GREAT breakfast buffet at Bernadino's in Inyokern. That place is da' bomb! A great weekend of driving 3oo miles to ride our bikes 16 or so miles... we had a blast!

    Teamwork makes the dream work!

Greenhorn is a funky little county park, right at the summit of Hwy 155. Virtually unmarked, and not readily visible from the road. But the sites are great, all are incredibly beautiful. Quiet, has water, actual flush toilets and free hot showers. Camp host was blowing out the wood supply, so we went crazy with roaring fires both nights. It was great, and highly recommended. About a 20 min drive back down to Lake Isabella. Recommended!

    With bonus biking!

Campfire time is all-time therapy. Nothing like it. Even when there's no campfire. :geek:
