Ran a quickie up Maple Springs this afternoon, and came across this guy. Looked pretty fresh, leaves haven’t even wilted yet. Dirt under root cluster still dry and fresh, would have been wet and puddled if it fell before the rains. Bike is in pic for scale- this guy was huge. I’ve ridden by him many times, as many of us have. Very sad

You know, I have tree and rock "friends " that I look for on every ride. I have lost quite a few friends in the last few years to fire, water, wind, and erosion.
I saw a few survivors this morning and muttered a few words as I rode by.
I know, weird, but it makes me happy so...

Unfortunately if long term drought continues in socal, many of the trees may die.

Hmm why I am struggling with the location?

Sad yes... Sad also as will probably be mostly cut up and hauled away. In natural death it would have a long after life and be home to many little creatures for many many years to come.

Guessing ~mile and a half up from gate? Didn't look at mileage. This is looking downhill, asphalt road is out of pic on far right. Small dirt road which skirted tree and made a type of turn-around

Many, many trees have already died. Hundreds, if not thousands. Its hard to see those giant oaks down like that. Places like Cheseboro have suffered big losses in particular, that I have seen. Those oaks are THE landmark of So Cal where foliage is concerned, IMO.

Yeah enjoy the trees around Beek's Place while you can - they are all gonna go. Most are non-natives planted and cared for by Beek. Several died in the last year and some are losing branches due to the winds. There is a reason why pine trees don't grow on the tops of ridges up there.

And which probably contributed to its demise. Not a good idea to let trucks drive around on a tree's feeder roots - which is anything within the drip line of the canopy.

FWIW I am a member of the Nellie Gail Ranch landscaping committee. In the last year we have planted 700 trees (on our way to a goal of 1,000) to replace many of the non-native trees (primarily eucalyptus) that we have lost over the last 10 years.

Are you replacing with native trees?
