Snake ID

Hey @SnakeCharmer - can I get snake ID on this baby? Found him in our basement... give him a spritz of water cuz he looked a little parched. Juvenile black rat snake?

A good pet where snakes are concerned.

 

First snake I've picked up with my hands in decades I put him out in the rocks where the voles live

 

Carefully holding a wild animal is an awesome experience. Cool that you got hands on to help the little guy, Greg.

That healthy California King I posted recently made me want to pick him up. I touched his rear body and he seemed not thrilled with that so I let him alone. I can imagine a nasty bite from a pissed off snake that kills and eats rattlers.

 

Cali Kings are not known for biting. It's is one of their personality traits that makes them desirable to snake keepers. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen, though. We caught many in our youth on the Central Coast and only one ever bit us.
