Listening to the chain fight it’s way through all that extra hardware is like nails on the chalk board!

Not to mention the feel of the extra drag!

Yea not the same. When I had a geared bike I rarely shifted and rode it much like a single speed but it wasn’t a singlespeed.

Fair enough. If noise bothers you then would a belt driven SS qualify?

I have always kinda wanted a belt drive but I really have no issues with a chain. Chain, rings and cogs are accessible at any bike shop and belt drive parts aren’t.

I bought a house... no new bike parts for me. Chains are much quieter when you get rid of all the extra junk.

Ya know, I may have to call "party foul" here.

IIRC, you were riding your Hightower in a single gear on the Zen Trail. :whistling:

Nope....it is not the same. Having the chain go through the derailluer gives a much different sensation than bypassing it all together.

Not even close. The direct transfer of the tension on your chain and no noise except for the hum of your hub and nature makes SSing something special. The only thing more pure when it comes to bikes is a fixie. Did it on the road but on dirt is just crazy. I don't have those type of skills.

I went ahead and ordered a 22T cog. Last weekend on Skyline in BB was... challenging on the 21T. Should have ordered it as soon as I got home, but I must have been too traumatized from the day. Unfortunately won't have it for tomorrow's outing.
SS is still pretty fun, but so is not dying while climbing up Plantation!

Thanks! I'm hoping to survive... we're just riding the top portion, with plenty of picnic and rock climbing breaks planned. I'm testing out a hypthesis that last weekend was lack of sleep/food/altitude combining to screw up the day.

But yeah, I have a 22T in the mail. Maybe should have started with that and worked up (down?) to the 21T!
