    Did a harding/joplin ride with John from non-dot and 19 other folks on saturday. Joplin was loose, dusty, rutted, rough and gnarly. Several people have asked about the baby heads and to that I would respond, good news, bad news. Good news, the water washed away the baby heads... the bad news, the water replaced the baby heads with watermelon sized rocks. Overall the trial is in surprisingly good shape considering the destruction it saw about 7-8 months ago. Some parts of the trail are way worse then before, but other parts have been sorta fixed.

    Either way, tough ride, I was knackered at the end of it. Joplin was pretty much like it always is, an experience :p

    The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a RED FLAG WARNING AND A HIGH WIND WARNING spread out for the next couple of days, starting tonight.

    The RED FLAG WARNING is in effect from 5:00am Wednesday (tomorrow) morning until 11:00pm Wednesday night.

    THE HIGH WIND WARNING is for a longer period of time - from 11:00pm this evening through 6:00pm Thursday.

    THIS MAY ALSO MEAN THAT EDISON SHUTS OFF POWER. While they are supposed to give us a warning we may or may not get one so please be prepared just in case.

    This is also a perfect storm for anyone looking to start a fire. We have had several reports of folks lighting fires around the canyons -a man in an RV was actually spotted on Santiago Cyn Rd. in broad daylight with a campfire - with the wind blowing at gusts upwards of 45mph.

    Please keep an eye out for anysuspicious activity that you see and call 911 if you do see something. This is extremely important for the obvious reasons. We all need to work together to help keep our community safe.

    Please see below for all the details.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM TO 11 PM PDT WEDNESDAY
    FOR STRONG GUSTY WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY FOR THE MOUNTAINS...
    VALLEYS...AND INLAND ORANGE COUNTY.
    The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a Red Flag
    Warning...which is in effect from 5 AM to 11 PM PDT Wednesday.
    * WINDS...Areas of east to northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts
    to 35 mph. Gusts to 45 mph between Huntington Beach and Laguna
    Beach.
    * HUMIDITY...Lowest daytime humidity 5 to 15%.
    * TIMING...Winds developing tonight with the strongest and most
    widespread winds from before sunrise through the morning on
    Wednesday. Red Flag conditions are expected between 5 AM and 11
    PM Wednesday
    * OUTLOOK...Weaker, but still breezy east to northeast winds will
    continue Wednesday night into Thursday morning, then westerly
    winds and slightly higher relative humidity return Thursday
    afternoon.
    * IMPACTS...If fire ignition occurs, conditions will be favorable
    for extreme fire behavior and rapid growth which would threaten
    life and property.
    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
    A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
    are either occurring now....or will shortly. A combination of
    strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can
    contribute to extreme fire behavior.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    HIGH WIND WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM
    PDT THURSDAY...

    * WHAT...Areas of east to northeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts
    to 55 mph. Gusts to 80 mph near and below the Cajon and San
    Gorgonio Passes and near the coastal slopes of the Santa Ana
    Mountains.

    * WHERE...Coastal slopes of the mountains into the adjacent
    valleys and inland Orange County. Strongest gusts near and below
    the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes and near the coastal slopes
    of the Santa Ana Mountains.

    * WHEN...Winds developing during this evening and strengthening
    late tonight with the strongest and most widespread winds from
    before sunrise through the morning on Wednesday. Winds will not
    be quite as strong nor widespread for Wednesday night into
    Thursday morning with winds gradually diminishing Thursday
    afternoon.

    * IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines.
    Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult,
    especially for high profile vehicles.

    That would explain why I saw 4 fire watch trucks in the canyons between Silverado and the Trabuco wash.

    How do I find out with the gate on Maple Springs is closed? Thinking of doing Maple to Motorway tomorrow, but would rather not deal with trucks and dirt bikes. Thanks!

    Check the CNF website for road conditions. Though they don't update very often. Not even sure if they put an update date on it.

    As you drive up Silverado, check the sign by the firehouse near the entrance. They might update more often.

    Also, keep asking here. Might be the most frequent updates.

    It hasn’t been closed since last spring and probably won’t be unless we get some really nasty weather...

    With the gate at 4 Corners open now for vehicles, it’s like the 405 up there.

    4. ARE THE TRAILS IN THE BURNED AREA READY TO BE REBUILT?

    A resident of one of the cabins in Trabuco Canyon has been spreading mis-information criticizing the Forest Service for not letting volunteers rebuild the trails (Holy Jim, Trabuco and West Horse Thief) in the burned area, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Before any trails are rebuilt the Forest Service soils engineer has to verify the slopes are stable enough with growth that they will not continue to erode and cover any rebuilt trails over with debris flows. Until the Forest Service gets that confirmation from the soils engineer - no trails will be rebuilt as it would be a waste of money and time. Once the soils engineer confirms the slopes are stable they will use Forest Service funds and volunteers to rebuild the trails. This all depends on rainfall. The best scenario would be 3 years of average rainfall dispersed throughout the rainy season. Years of heavy rain will delay the recovery because the erosion will prevent vegetation from reestablishing on the slopes and will further weaken them.

    The Warrior’s Society supports the Forest Services decision to wait until the slopes are determined to be stable. We do not want to waste our efforts rebuilding trails that will be covered by debris flows off the slopes because the slopes have not yet become stable.

    Per Twitter, don't know why

    For those who are unaware, Ortega Highway (Hwy 74), will be closed from Grand Avenue to South Main Divide this Saturday and Sunday between 6am and 6pm to all vehicles. This means recreation and resident access will also be unavailable. Contact @Caltrans8 for more information https://t.co/yqJnP5kE4N

    Senate Bill 127. They’re gonna remove two lanes and add a dedicated paseo on each side, lined with street trees, non-native of course. Water fountains and trash cans every 500 feet. Picnic tables with electrical outlets, WiFi, and bike lockers every 1,000 feet. And street art/sculpture installations for the ambient effect.

    Love the exaggeration! Sounds about right for our legislature to require WiFi, bike lockers and street art/sculpture for ambient effect.
