That's a sweet figure-8 that most people only do once... It's just tough. Coming down the chunky Zion switchbacks is gnarly!

    Let's go!

@rossage which tree did they finally cut?
Not that big one with the step cutouts?

Yeah, that's the one. It had those weird steel pipe impalers, or hand holds too.
Should've took a pic but they basically cut a foot wide swath, and it looks like the tree settled in after the rains, so now it's about 6.257 inches wide.
Other than that, the trails are in exceptional shape, with deep stream crossings requiring portage

So, I went up to Red Box to have a look and see if there is any snow left. Snow is mostly gone and is not an issue on the trail.
Valley Forge trail is going to need a lot of work. The first, big tree down, requiring a dismount and gymnastics to get over, is right after the first switchback.
    Foreshadowing?...
I stoicly plodded on. The next few downers weren't bad, and #5-8 were nice enough to fall down nice and close to each other. I laughed at #10, cursed at #12, #15 was the apex of frustration.
The dew that shook off the branches with the slightest vibration, made sure that my arms and hands became soaked during the limbo sessions.
    At least 20 trees down...
Avoid it for now unless you're toting a saw.
    Still had fun.

Broke through the clouds, saw a double rainbow. Pic doesn't do it justice...

Strawberry loop is in excellent to orgasmic condition. All the big trees down have been cleared-as of 3/10.
The Gabrielino between Red box and switzers is clear and fast. Lots of new rocks and re-worked stream crossings.
    Below Switzers it's a tree-hopping, stream-fording mess.
Sunset is a chunkapalooza of jagged drops and tight switchies
El P don't get much better.
    Time to ride the Gabes
    Get some!

Today, I had the pleasure of riding with @Luis, Pete, and Scott on a front ranger.
    Usually, I ride alone.

Went out to check out the Silver Mocassin today. Thought I was prepared for what I found...

First, just getting up there requires an 18 mile/30 minute detour. Both ways. Not a bad drive, you get to drive past the backside of Strawberry and there are magnificent metamorphic rocks exposed in the road cuts.
I started at Charlton. 34° in the sun but no wind. Rode up to the Silver Moc trailhead and it didn't take long to hit downed trees. Most have been trampled into easy-overs but it gets old fast. Lots of water damage, with deep, square - edged ruts running down the middle of the trail. Encroaching brush dumping dew and frost on me.
But man, it was beautiful out there.
Streams meander and braid where before there was only sand.
Sharp edged deer tracks in the mud of a small meadow.
Then, it was back to the trees and trail damage.
Worst section is the first mile of the Silver Moc coming from 3 Points. Drop in from Christian Camp and save yourself the trouble.
From there on down to Horse Flats is a good ride, with water damage and an occasional tree, or two. And stream crossings!
The switchbacks have been hosed down, prison riot style, into pure rock pornography. Appropriately, I rode it rigid. Wished I hadn't. Big tree down there. Going to need chainsaws for that girthy log!
The trail is completely washed out just past the Chilao road. 8ft to flat if you like your jumps like that.
But man, it was beautiful out there.

Still worth it. Just be ready.

Valley forge is back! The MWBA Sawyers cleaned it up and it's back to flowy goodness. The Gabrielino from VF to West Fork is in great shape too!

Who's been out in the Gabes lately?
I know everybody didn't go to Kokopelli.
Wondering about the brush on Strawberry/Gabrielino and if the 2 is open past Red box...

The Tour of California is supposed to race through Red Box from the Upper Big Tujunga Rd so I was expecting it would be open.

VF was worked on by MWBA recently. Cleared a lot of deadfall.

The Gabe section you speak of is really overgrown with buckthorn. That section will be worked on next trail work day.

Jet lagged and up at 4am...

I like to add it on to a clockwise Strawberry route. Start from Switzers, go around the peak. Climb up the road from Red box and drop VF from Eaton saddle
Adds 8 miles and 1500ft climbing so it make s Strawberry into a tougher ride.
Another way is to climb up the Gabe from Switzers, then up the road from Red box to VF. Connect to the Gabe, out and back to West fork, then down to Switzers from Red box. 22 miles, 3000ft

    Get some!
