Ouch, indeed. I'd probably never do the event, I'm really not a fan of time cutoffs. I don't even like to race!! It's weird, I love the events, the people & atmosphere, but once things get rolling I just do my thing.

Yeah...I wasn't recommending the event. But I'd love to get back up there and ride a bunch of stuff at my own pace. Now back to your Tour Divide

I had trouble with the switch breaking on my Sinewave light after AZTR as well. Was fine the whole race but the little switch lever broke off when I went to put the light back on my bars at home. Contacted Sinewave to see if they could send a replacement switch, but they said it was a non-replaceable part :cautious: and had me send the whole light back. They were nice enough to send a free replacement light, but that seems like a terrible design to use something so fragile that can't be replaced. The switch on the new unit is half the length and will hopefully be ok.

It's quite the dichotomy to see these sublime vistas and then think about the suffering that was attached. Pretty relaxing from the couch!

That is a bit odd. The replacement switch from K-Lite feels a bit more robust. I wonder if I weakened it when I laid the bike down on Union Pass. There was mud on it now that I look at the pic.

I've been having a bit of the same during these last few postings. It's been almost 2 months now since I left the Divide, time heals all wounds right? I'm looking at my own pictures reminding myself the world of hurt I was in during a few sections. It's kinda like taking pictures of the wind, doesn't translate so well.

Yo, John. Thanks for linking your writings.

Your Salida experience... That’s the real adventure. The farthest reaches of your own self. Never been visited or mapped. Completely unknown, and only one person can explore this inner space. You did it. It’s badass.

Thanks @mike I had plenty of time to wander around that inner space. I still can't believe how it all went down those final couple of days. Never would've guessed that.

I really believed I was going to feel good enough to continue on, heck, I bought all my needed batteries for the push to AW while at the pharmacy in Salida!!
I have that 4 letter motivator stuck on my handlebars: HTFU. You'll do great on Saturday.

That note makes me smile, John. Because the uncertain outcome is ultimately what made it an adventure. I don't see it as an unfinished project or rebuffing. It's part of the tapestry we weave.

You have been blessed with bike DNA, and with your good sense, have had a lot of success. So you just might have been due. :) At a point it becomes a health issue, and not about HTFU (as you don't need to be told). My buddy swore off long pushes after the Vapor Trail 125 because the heavy recovery and other issues. I'm surprised to not hear of more anomalies considering just the sleep deprivation. That the Divide took down a prepared rider like yourself speaks of the difficulty.

Well, this is it. Final post on the 2019 Tour Divide. Sad to see it go. Look for a continuation of the route next year.

Thanks so much for sharing all of this. It's an important chapter in life. Looking forward to hearing more from you in time as your journeys continue and perhaps one day, to cross paths in what I think is the most beautiful state in the union, Arizona.

Thank you. I really appreciate the kind words. Come on over to AZ anytime, the heat is about to break!! For anyone interested in some AZ bikepacking, put Feb. 28 - March 2, 2020 on your calendar. That's the next installment of the Queen's Ransom ride I host every year.

If you haven't seen the movie of the 2019 Tour Divide, check it out on Pearl Izumi's YouTube Channel. I was able to catch the final screening in Tucson and listen to both Lael & Chris Seistrup tell tales of their adventure. Fun evening.

As much as I visit this site, I am always stunned by the threads I missed.

This is one of those trips that I could almost see myself being talking into :) I was checking out your route map when I saw Flagg Ranch :) I'm a big fan and have stayed there on two separate trips. I always wondered where that gravel road to the west went. Idaho somewhere I assumed. That must have been the trail you came in from.
