I posted here inviting, but no takers. Some interest but no one jumped in. Luckly I posted on the OTB board also and I got someone from there to share all the awesome views. For some reason my phone was taking very crappy pictures today. Sorry about that.

This was my first time riding the old route. I did not know we help conmemorate the first century of the old road. It first open in 1915 not sure of the exact date, tho. 5af16ed23b93a8821a5759b0b07be1b5.jpg

My weapon of choice was my RLT9 which turned out to be right bike for the job. d6d3113f79470d7fd1f034b355ab83b5.jpgb708e60597212aa9e56b807ccc03561a.jpg

We all know this familiar old site. Sandberg Inn, now trail head for Mikie's favorite Golden Eagle trail.
I have not been riding a whole lot in the last couple of weeks. Due to a bad cold and other things that kept me off the bike. When we finally made it to Sandberg. We had about 3 hours of ride time and feeling pretty beat. One thing was for sure the way back promised to be a lot easier, that's way we kept pushing to point "B".2739590e02724289649c0e99931d9112.jpg

We ended with 52/6500 not bad.

Would have loved to gone, too late of notice and I don't own a Gravel Bike, Mr. "I have a quiver to choose from"

That IS a great ride though. Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

    Looks like fun...

You say that a gravel bike was the right choice. Is it mostly hardpack? Just wondering how the hardtail would have done...

This is in my neck of the woods...
I have ridden it on my old aluminum road bike and it beat the Be-Jesus out of me cuz the bike was too stiff.
It's actually mostly deteriorated pavement but paved. Hardtail would do fine. My 5 inch squish bike would do okay cuz I can lock out the front fork but I would still like to have a full lock out shock on the rear...

Just blurry vision not "double" Mikie. Apologize again for the bad pix. I didn't realize how bad the were until I saw them on the computer. Probably a foggy lense I don't know. No I have to start thinking about getting me a camera.
Hardtail would've been fine Faust29. I did broke a spoke on the way back. My body had a spoke wrench so I was able to tight and loose some and made it back.

If I had had a vehicle, I'd have been all over this. But alas, I am in Anaheim and had no way to get there. At least, not without riding my bike 50+ miles to your trailhead.

If you're on an MTB, you can drop down behind the old Tumble Inn ruins on an old fire road that drops down into a canyon. Turn right at the bottom of the canyon, and you can double back almost all they way to Sandberg. But alas, the road is gated what looks to be a very short distance from Sandberg. Too bad, as it would make for a nice loop. There are also a few fun, but short, ninja singletracks along the RR if you look for them and do a little exploring.

    Nice RR, thanks for sharing.

I'm always interested in great rides. But full disclosure, as Faust can attest...gnarly exposure on narrow trails isn't my forte.

I take it this is mostly deteriorated pavement and dirt/gravel? I'll keep this tentative until closer to the date. 2 weeks after that I'll be in Utah committing suicide by climbing with no air :)

I might be interested if it is June 14th. I rode this on my road bike years ago.
Warning: I am an ex mtb racer, but am old, and slow now.

We pretty much ALL used to be mtb racers  ...and welcome to imtbtrails! :D

@faust and runs with scissors, Interstate 5 replaced Old Ridge Route so this is a pretty wide (two lane) deteriating road...
