Our new addition is fitting in well... With so much going on lately, it was probably the worst time in the world to adopt again. But, she'll be worth it in the long run. Even if she did chew the cord off of the portable AC unit yesterday. Our last few dogs were never chewers, so I guess we're going to make up for that with this one...

Props to the newly passed legislation which prohibits pet stores from selling any but rescue dogs, cats or rabbits. Saying no to animal mills in CA is a great start – love to see more states enact.

Next time at the pet store, be sure to say hello to the rescues.

My little rescued buddy “Velcro” was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. About a month ago. His blood sugar was 3 times what it should be. We are supposed to give him shots twice a day for the rest of his life. That ain’t gonna happen. We have been down paths like this with other pets in the past and all it did was alienate them from us.

We completely changed Velcro’s diet to all protein cat food added Colloidal Silver to his water and he has “seemed” to stabilize some. He is a bag of bones.

Velcro is like a dog. If I call him he will come and jump in my lap. He has been a great pal for many years!

I HIGHLY recommend moving away from all grain based food for your kids.

Velcro was named that because his claws grow super long, super fast and he gets them caught in everything including the carpet while walking. Kinda funny.

The last three years of Carlo’s life we gave him an oral shot 2x daily and fluid under the skin via needle 1-3x week. It’s a lot of work that most people can’t or won’t integrate into their lives. It’s a tough position to be in. Thanks for doing your best by Velcro.

PS: Mikie, if a definite end of life decision is in the cards for your sweet boy, you can have a specialist come to your house. We did that, and I would never do it any other way. Nobody wants to have their last experience in a facility. Comfortable at home surrounded by loved ones is the last nice thing a person could do for his pet. Sorry, man

Very unusual markings and color for Border Coll

Very unusual marking/color for collies. Almost Australian shepherd like. Are they mixed?

 

They are both ABCA Border Collies. American Border Collie Association When the AKC decided to recognize the Border Collie breed in 1994 (against the desires of the majority of border collie owners in this country) the blood lines split. There are, for all intents and purposes, two types of border collies in this country - working dog lines, bred for intelligence and disposition - and AKC lines, bred for appearance. In time, the two lines will probably look completely different; AKC lines are already smaller, with a smaller head and shorter snout, because that is the direction the AKC is taking their line. I am prohibited from showing either dog in an AKC conformation trial, though I can compete in AKC obedience and agility events if I so desire (where AKC registration is not a requirement).

Dash's sire had a blue merle coat (recessive trait). Her dam had a red and white coat. Six pups in the litter: one black and white, two red and white, one red merle, two blue merle. Rocket is of course a standard black and white, albeit with flashy markings. Both dogs have prick ears (upright ears) and rough coats which are genetic traits passed on by their parents.

Rocket is a little unusual in that he was from a litter of one pup. I normally contract for pick of litter, and will not buy a dog without first meeting and interacting with both parents. Then I usually spend a fair amount of time with the pups before making a selection. In Rocket's case, his bloodline was the breeder's favorite, but he was an only pup. The breeder was worried about him, so she brought Rocket and his mom into her home, where she kept them in the living room so she could keep an eye on him. Because he grew up with no litter mates, he is very strongly bonded with humans. He prefers people to other dogs

I'm not some crazy person who thinks dogs are the same thing as humans. But I love my dogs as dogs. I always prioritize intelligence and disposition over all other traits... because that is what I want in my companion animals.

Photo of Dash as a wee thing before her eyes had opened. Dash has an extremely strong work drive, so when I bike or run with her she wears a water pack to slow her down. I remove it for downhills on the bike... and then have a problem with her crowding me from behind
