Pads; miles truckerco nukeproof..Oh My!

Alrighty then...... Looking to get a couple sets of brake pads for my Shimano XT 4 piston brakes.
The factory pads are great, but as we all know unavailable and as the pandemic taught me, way over priced. And I think Shimano has no real intention of making then again.

I recently installed NukeProof pads front and rear. Stopped great, no noticable fade, and quiet. Well.... Until the bike was rained on for 15 minutes. They then squealed like mad. Sounded like a train horn me. However they then quieted up ( rain stopped?) But had to turn around due to mud so don't know if they stayed quiet.

So I'm going put this out and watch the games, as we have some good opinions on this board.
Which brake pads do you prefer as Mtb replacements?

1) Miles Pads?
2) Truckerco pads?
3) NukeProof pads?
4) I just run metal on metal until factory pads came back in stock?

I have been using TruckerCo semi-metallic pads since everything suddenly went out of stock.

They seem to work as well as the expensive Shimano pads they replaced, and they are lighter. I have never used any of your other options. :cautious:

If you happen to use the TruckerCo OSM9 pads, I have a set you can have as I bought the wrong ones once.

Sounds like your pads are a winner. No pad out there remains totally silent when they are wet.

Nice. IIRC faust29 mentioned trucker co made a grip of sqealing, hence the curiosity. But if you've been using for a couple years no issues that's a plus!

I learned all I needed to about Trucker Co when @Lost Kiwi was behind me on the Gab. I’m hoping to regain full hearing someday… Keep those things in the OC.

Although… it was pretty entertaining seeing him pour water on the rotors to cool them down. :D The Gabes will test your equipment…

My Miles pads are quiet. Always.

Did the brakes sizzle when the water was applied?

And a fan for Miles you are

I tried your brakes. They aren’t suitable for me.

@mtnbikej i had a set of Jagwire sport pads on the back of the Smash (Magura MT7 brakes I just replaced with Shimano Saint). The backing plate is thicker than the pad material on my particular set, so that’s where the price/value becomes moot. The sport compound is hard and lasted longer than the Magura-branded performance and race compounds I had in front, but it doesn’t grip much, rendering the Jagwire pads a non-starter for front wheel application. My Jagwire pads were red, though, so they looked cooler than any other pad on the market for my bike’s color scheme.

@Danimal I’ll pay extra for pads manufactured by the company that made the brakes I’m running. I barely ride 1,000 miles a year, so I’d rather feel confident on the DH during the several minutes per year I get to use my brakes.

I've been using TruckerCo for several years on several different bikes. Currently they're on both of our gravel bikes and mountain bikes. Zero fade on the gravel bikes and Jennifer's Mojo but on occasion I'll get a little noise on my Ranger if they get heated up on a steep descent. The noise is when they're first applied after they cool down. Other than that, they're silent. At $7 a set, I can't see any reaso to use anything else at this time.

Thats why my truckerco do as well except for this one time.....

Yeah the back brake was absolutely cooked! It took awhile to dry out and the noise they made while doing so was horrendous.

Best pads I've used were uberbike ones that came on some brakes I got in the UK. I haven't seen them for sale here. Semi metallics that were eerily quiet even in the wet.

I don't buy them because of value....yes, they are cheaper than other options....but I find they work quite well. As I said, I've run them on both my XT's and Guide's.

Me too. I removed the awesome but rubby Magura MT7s and put back on the Shimano Saints but with 220f/203r whereas the last time I had the Saints on there the rotors were 203f/180r. Please, please Crazy Bear do not spill mineral oil on my calipers or rotors!
Have you tried doing the "Shiguras"? Vital, PB, EmptyBeers... had long posts talking about it being the best of both worlds (great stopping power and modulation).

I haven't tried the Shiguras yet, but that may be my next experiment depending on my experience with the Saints with big boy rotors. When I switched from Saints to MT7 in April/May of 2021, I increased the rotor size at the same time, so I couldn't really compare the two brake sets. Having said that, the Maguras with larger rotors performed better while dropping Critters compared to the Shimanos with candy-ass 203 (RT-66)/180 (RT-86) rotors.

Anecdote: IceTech rotors (RT-86) reduce fade compared to standard steel RT-76 or RT-66 shimano rotors, even though they tend to warp more often.

I run this sizing also, I have been using Serfas pads for awhile now since I couldn’t find any Shimano ones that fit correctly. Great power and quiet. People should look into these also.

Are you still running the Magura MDR-P rotors on Saint calipers? I never made it to that combo. My Magura rotors wore down to less than 1.8mm, so now I plan to run SRAM centerline rotors on Shimano Saint brakes.

I am still running the MDR-P rotors but I have Saint levers and MT-420 4 piston calipers that came on the bike. This is a perfect setup for me. I may try the bigger and thicker TRP rotors down the road.
