The guys I know and ride with try to get together every month or so and for a ride together. If possible it turns into an S24O (sub-24 hour overnighter). We were able to pull that off this weekend, with camping at O'Neill Regional Park in Rancho Santa Maragarita. The planning is pretty cool if I must say so: Meet up at Irvine Metrolink, and ride up to O'Neill. Camp there, with dinner at Rose Canyon Cantina. Then the next day go up the hill to RSM proper and eat breakfast at Latte-Da. The next day cruise downhill via Trubuco Canyon till it empties out in San Juan Capistrano. Pick up the train their and head home! Works great as members of this informal group come from San Diego, North L.A., the IE, as well as locals from Irvine and OC. The route is a fantastic one, you can see here: http://ridewithgps.com/ Notice how dirt is maximized on there! Really thoughtfully planned out.
Bikes were a mix of lightweight sport-touring, OG MTB, brand-new mid-Fat/B+ bike-camper, and pretty much everything in between. Zero mechanicals. One crash due to hooking bars on a skinny part of the trail. A great time I'd encourage anyone to try out! The route is a lot of fun, and doable in a day, but what's wrong with cutting it in half with a sleep-over in the middle!
Met a local guy, Simon, who was pretty impressed with us! He rode a bit of the trail until time ran out for him and he had to take off. Here's a pic of the whole crew he took.

It looks like you guys had a good ride! I'm sorry that I didn't make it down... Family issues jumped in the way. o_O It's neat to see a new perspective for the trails that are my local quick loop.

    Nice!!

Exploiting local conditions and resources...Way to show how it's done. Much more to MTB than ripping sweet ST.

Would have been great if you dropped by... we only drank half the beer!
For me personally, and I think I can say for the crew I was with, we really just like getting dirt under our tires. Anything that really lets us do that is primo as far as we're concerned! But we do LOVE the singletrack as well. The section climbing up through Whiting and the little bit we can catch off Trabuco (Waterworks) are just fantastic! But yeah, Rose Canyon ain't too bad, either!!!

It was a real good time, for sure. The boy is still speaking to me, although for a few minutes there he was not a happy camper!

For anyone looking for a fun ride, this station-t0-station one is pretty good. A good route to get someone out there that's just getting into the MTB thing, or wants to ride more but doesn't know what's available. Or just want to have a social ride in general. It's really car-lite other than the first mile or so out of Irvine. And the real beauty is how it's serviced by Metrolink, so people can meet centrally if they're coming from different areas.

Awesome... I see an Aeropress, 2 homemade cone filter holders and what looks like a Porlex? Next time you go, I can provide the beans (home roaster here). And that ice bucket!!!

    Small world.

I bumped into Robert (not on your ride) and he was super cool explaining the trip. I believe the group was the SoCal Allrounders (?) He was pedaling a very clean Bruce Gordon & told me he had ridden last year's Strada Rossa too. I logged on their Google group but haven't heard back from them yet. Please keep us posted on future rides.

Well... By south Orange County standards, it is pretty remote. The closest Starbucks is a mile away!

Pretty rough out there! Makes me appreciate our for-bearers, trekking across the mountains and deserts to California!

It's fun, chill, interesting, good eating, all at the same time! I'll drop a post here next time we have one! they're going to be doing something in Ventura this weekend, but I'm riding recon for Strada Rossa routing instead. Which is still going to be fun!
