I signed my son up for the Over the Hump racing series. He is going into 6th grade next year, so he will be able to join Corona's Composite Team (middle school) for NICA. The OTH series should be a nice taste of fun racing before the next school year.

Does anyone on the forum have kids doing these races? It would be cool to meet up with some of you.

I wish I can do this with both my kids. Unfortunately distance and time is against me. Good luck to your son and let me know how he likes it.

Heck, I'd love to be able to do this myself. Alas, I can't make it there in time on weekdays.

I am pretty excited. I would rather spend my money on him than race myself. He is getting pretty good at riding. I bet by the end of this year he will be on all of my big boy rides.

It's a good way to ease one into racing. The courses are not overly tough, and for the most part everyone out there is out there to have fun. Not to mention the vibe is always top notch.

  6. I am going to scout it out this season to see if my kids would enjoy it. I have No idea what MTB racing for 6 and 9 year old girls is like.

  7. Derail: are these races something a 42 year old 235lb guy with 2.4" tires could have fun with? Or is it super serious Lycra only hardtail flat bar EPO territory ?

nah, its pretty mellow. I rode it the first time with my camel pak. No one said anything... I do recommend dropping the camel pak... its only like 20 minutes of racing for beginners...

If that's the case, then you were in the wrong class.

It is designed to take about 1 hr for all the different classes.

It's pretty much whatever you want it to be. I raced one two seasons ago with a buddy and we just had fun out there banging bars with each other and finished mid-pack. It's a pretty fun and mellow atmosphere. I signed up for the season with another buddy of mine this year to force myself to get out and race them. It's a fun hour on the bike with 100 of your best riding buddies followed by a couple tacos and a beer. What more could you ask for!

Laos should take about 20 mins. So beginners do 2 laps.

Sounds like me when I started OTH. I'm older, slightly lighter and ride a hardtail, wearing lycra (with spare EPO in the jersey pocket), but I'm hardly super serious. Yes. Do it. Have fun. Ride so hard it hurts. Drink a beer after and laugh about it.

My kid has done occasional races in the kids class. I hope to get him out for some junior races this year, and the new one-lap junior division may help that. Some of the juniors are serious, and seriously fast. But if you're trying to get him a taste of NICA, then it would probably be a good idea.

Here is a pic of my 10 year old. My 8 year old daughter told me she wanted to try a race too. I will probably sign her up for family night and see what she thinks. She does not have a competitive bone in her body. I am sure that if she was riding with some other girls she would turn it into a $10 social ride.

The first race is in the books. The course was super short, but Dan had fun. It will be fun to watch him push harder through the season.

The rest of my kids had a blast checking out the vendor tents.

Awesome. Courses should get longer in the coming weeks. They typically keep things a bit shorter the first week due to the delays from getting everyone checked in, first race bugs/glitches, etc.

I had a blast last night and it was awesome seeing the regulars again! Even saw some iMTB jerseys......

Took my kids yesterday for family night. Those OTH folks put on a nice event. Both my kids placed right in the middle which was surprising since it was 1 lap and their first time on the course. Now I gotta figure out my schedule for the next race, but I really think they were enticed by the rock wall and bounce house.

Awesome. I have the season pass. PM the next time you go to a race. I will introduce myself and my son. We missed last Tuesday, but we will be there next week.
