    OTB hits Tapia

    Proof: <a class="postlink" href="http://app.strava.com/activities/107606760" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://app.strava.com/activities/107606760</a>

Okay Okay, I admit! I just didn't HAPPEN to be at Tapia when the OTB Hammerhead Sharks showed up. I played it off at first like I happen to be there for a ride and then asked nonchalantly if I could join them. I got intel from UPSed that the Over the Bars Club was hitting Tapia so I snuck over to their site and took a peek at their Upcoming Ride Events and my buddy Luis was ride leader.

I was thinking there would be like 5 or 6 guys that would show up. Nope! Flippin' OTB Army. Now you gotta realize these guys are ALL hammerhead sharks which meant I would also be OTB (Off The Back) . I had already had my ride for the weekend on Friday with Willi-D and the Dirt Bags up at 5 Deer (Excellent Ride Report by Willi-D here: <a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.imtbtrails.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1071" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1071</a>), and, I got a bonus Road Ride in the day before at the Kern River Bike Path STRAVA: <a class="postlink" href="http://app.strava.com/activities/107291900" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://app.strava.com/activities/107291900</a> an awesome 20 mile nonstop Paseo, (out and back is 40 miles) down in Bakersfield. It's a great controlled ride for spinning and recovery. So although not that fresh, I really like hanging out with the OTB Crew.

It was really cool to see a bunch of the guys. And it was a who's who of friends. Always good to see UPSed, rode with him on Friday up at 5 Deer, hadn't seen MTBHotRod since I don't know when, re-met Steve, the man . . . the Legend, and Mr. Salsa Bernie the bigringrider101! As well as Luis, and Hans, and several more OTB guys who are going to kill me cuz I'm horrible with names...

One rider named Tess asked if she could steal my floor pump for some air for her rear tire, I thought, she really looked familiar, she thought the same thing, and it turns out I had met her when I went down and rode Backbone near Malibu. She gave me some antiseptic and a band aide for a boo boo I got down there. Great to see you again Tess (<--Spelling?)!

So these guys don't mess around. We saddled up and left from the Sports Complex and headed up to Tapia Canyon. What I normally do is ride up the main Fire Road then make my choice of the many Singletracks to bomb down. Then ride back up the fire road...

No..... Not Luis. We gotta climb up Junkyard ;) . I hung as long as I could and faired pretty well, but slowly began to fall off the back. My legs were screaming at me all ready. I can tell it was going to be a long ride... :D That's okay, I was Mountain Biking!

At the Towers we regrouped, then started the drops and looking back I thought it was really well thought out. First we hit Dog Tags and climbed back up, then out Sidewinder to "G" Out, which is the funnerest I have ever had on it (I'm addicted to dropping my seat now, I feel the Viagra kicking in  ). When we climbed back up to the Towers some of us hit Burn Victim, while some kicked it at the Towers and then we all did the infamous "The take us home singletrack": Towers/Kona/Creek/Carl's Combo. Rodney, lead the charge followed by UPSed, and then me. I'm not sure who was behind me but I sure didn't want them catching me.

I haftah admit, when we hit the "S" turns I missed the trail and went around UPSed, but Rodney stopped and then bolted, I took off after him with UPSed hot on my rear wheel and we did this searing singletrack marathon descent all the way back to the fire road. Man! I gave it my very all and still did not hit the top 100 on STRAVA! Aghhhh! I also gave everything I had to keep Rodney in sight.

Back at the Sports Complex, we talked a bit and then I headed out. Man! What a great weekend, hardly do I evah get to ride 3 days in a row, but with weather like this  , how can you not! Only So Cal!!!

Here be some pics, looks like we just hung out on a hill . . . huh?

The climbing for me was tough today, but the OTB company was beyond outstanding! The descending was at times near maniacal (perfect!) I was amazed how fast my times were and how little impact they had on the STRAVA boards  . There are some amazingly fast folks out there.

What a great day. Thanks Over The Bars Club! You guys totally rock  !
    Ride On!

Great ride report Mikie. It was so much fun riding with a great group of riders. Especially those who have not experienced some of our local ST. It made it fun to see all of the smiles on their faces after bombing G-Out, Dog Tags, Sidewinder, etc. It made me realize how jaded we get riding these trails on an almost daily basis. I even heard someone telling Hans that they need to put Tapia on their regular ride rotation. Only bummer was that the taco truck I'd convinced everyone to go to was not there. Guess we'll have to do it again.

Hey guys thanks for joining the OTB crew at Tapia. Mikie I thought everybody used the wayside to junkyard climb as a warm up...hehehe
I have been trying to get the OTBers to come out to that area, last time it was just Bert, UPSed and myself there so imagine my surprise when I saw 13 riders at the parking lot, plus one more when Ed finally showed. Good times indeed. Thanks Rodney for leading the hammerheads while I rode mid-pack to make sure we didn't lose anybody. We did hit a taco truck anyways before heading home, I can feel the grease from the asada tacos coursing through my body... maybe next time we ride there we eat at the one you know.

IMHO, the best tacos in town are from the stand in front of Tio's Market. Their homemade Horchata is pretty good too. If they aren't there on a particular day, some of the trucks will do in a pinch.

I like Taco Valdes that parks in front of the diner right next to the new AM/PM. Great street tacos and the best al pastor. They even throw in a little crispy tostada with beans on top for free. Every time I ride with friends or family they always want to hit-up the truck for some tacos and a cold Mexican coke afterwards.
