Was looking at my Thule bike rack the other day and thinking although it works very well, it's looking a little ragged from some years of use.

The 1up is a good looking rack, good reviews, and as a really nice added benefit it weighs less than an pregnant pachyderm. And the price isn't as big as one either.

When checking their website i don't see anything about the ability to lock the bikes into the rack, or the rack onto the vehicle. For those that have 1up, can they be locked?
And better yet, are they holding up to a few years of abuse?
My inquiring mind wants to know.

Their solution is not really secure. They sell wheel locks that bolt through the rack. I usually carry a chain or cable lock and loop it through the frame and attached to the hitch ring. More secure than a an integrated system…IMHO

Well I have a cheap lock, and can always buy a better one if needed.
Hhmm... Interesting they didn't add anything better.

And although not related companies, I already have a few OneUp items on the bike.

Even the hitch lock is kind of cheap. I can see it easily snapped with a cheater bar. The rack is awesome though. Love it.

The built in Thule cable locks are pretty weak, so can't get much worse!

They use a special Allen key specific to the rack that "locks" it to the hitch.
Durability is great, although I don't really abuse mine, e.g. bumpy dirt road trips or heavy e bikes. I have double rack, usually have only 1 bike on it. I've had it for 7 years.

LOL.... I checked them out, not a serious business by the looks of it.

1up in the other hand is 3 to 10 business days to ship. That's very reasonable in my book. Figuring they probably assemble to order.

    Love my one up.

I lock the bike to the rack with a u-lock with a thick cable In another just simple cable takes me about 30 seconds to put on and take off.

Needless to say I'm not leaving them overnight exposed in places. I wouldn't leave them but when I run in for lunch or shopping or whatever it's fine.

With respect to the rack to the actual car, there's a loop on both my rack and the hitch if I want to run a chain through that or anything... I don't.

Apropos of nothing, really, but I got rear ended at the height of the pandemic. My Yakima Hold-Up spine - the part that is inserted in the hitch - got destroyed.

Yakima racks were not to be found, but it turned out I could order the spine separately. I could have ordered all the parts for the rack, and had them in a few days...but I couldn't buy a complete rack anywhere.

Such are the vagaries of parts, but I could have replaced the entire rack with separate pieces and in a few days.

There are options out there, folks!!!!

The price of bike racks is just getting ridiculous. Too rich for my blood.

With that said, I'd absolutely spend your money on them.

I’ve got a couple of Thule sidearms for the roof, but I’m thinking of fabbing a hitch frame for them. Going back and forth between welded aluminum, welded steel, or bolting something together off 8020.net.

Trying to come up with a Jeep-friendly solution. Probably should have just ordered a Gladiator, since it comes with a place to put bikes.

    Yes Twice.
After the first one saved my car from Major damage during the rear end. Completely destroyed the little Mazda 3 that hit me opened it like a can opener.

The other insurance company started giving me a little $hit about the cost of it and I told him they were lucky that it didn't have my $7,000 mountain bike on it and they turn around and bought me brand new :)

I never worry about my rack baby!!!

I went with the 2 door Jeep. So, my options are even more limited.

But I have my van, and I didn't want the two to overlap much.

I would buy it again. Sturdy and easy to load. No matter which rack I had, I would still carry a chain and cable with me if I was going to leave them unattended for more than a few seconds.

keep in mind, you need to buy the double (fixed double) if you plan on adding two more trays for. a total of 4 bikes. The single is capped at 3 total trays.

I bought the locks all at once, two to lock the trays to the rack and one for the hitch. This way they are keyed alike. I may look for a beefier solution for the hitch lock since that stays on overnight.

Ok, the votes are in, and you didn't disappoint. most are willing to spend my money, soooo ...

It's ordered. 1Up USA, Silver single.
I have a double Thule now and only have carried 2 bikes maybe twice in over three years, so I'm good. Now to wait....3-10 days to ship. :cautious::cool:

I had a cheap walmart rack, then an expensive thule, then a more expensive yakima... wow what a waste of money.
the 1up rack was the best buy ever. had it now for years. Still works perfect. Easy. safe. reliable.

I've considered it several times. If I did sell the T2, I'd likely buy a Recon Rack. Well now it's a 1Up Recon Rack. I can almost sell the T2 for about half the cost of the Recon Rack. yea, like I said earlier... I'll be taking the T2 to the grave with me.:laugh:

I have a T2 with the 4 bike extension on it... other than being heavy AF, it's a great rack. I don't use it much, but when we need it, it sure earns it's keep!

This is part of the motivation, taking that rack off and on often and it's heavy!

And will put the T2 up for sale in a couple weeks. :)

@Cyclotourist it is heavy and it is a great rack, bombproof. No issues other than the weight. oh, it does wobble quite a bit when uproght.

@Danimal agreed 100%. Mine is also a 4 bike rack and heavy AF. The main reason I want to replace it is my wife cant close it on her own, its too heavy. Heck, I can barely do it on my own.
