Sometimes epic rides just happen out of the blue. Last Sunday's ride was no exception.

The plan: Meet at Switzer Picnic lower parking lot at 7:30
The route: Climb nature's canteen ST to clear creek junction
Climb Josephine FR and do Strawberry loop to Redbox
Redbox to Eaton saddle where Valley Forge begins
Descend Valley Forge to Gabrielino ST
    Climb Gabrielino ST to Redbox
Redbox to JPL via the Gabrielino (we added this part since we didn't climb Mt Disappointment)

Since it rained the day before, we lucked out with perfect weather and hero dirt. We were treated to spectacular views as soon we got above the clouds on Josephine fire road.

David on Josephine. Strawberry peak in the background almost directly above his head.

Mount Lukens in the distance peeking out above the clouds.

A slight breeze made the clouds swirl around giving the effect of rolling waves

It was hard to keep focus on the single track, the views were something else. I stopped to take this shot looking towards Mt Pacifico area in the distance.

Single track action. The decomposed granite is awesome after a little rain.

After Strawberry we stopped briefly at Redbox to top off with water and rode up Mt Wilson Rd, bypassing the road up to Mt Disappointment. We weren't sure of the condition of the single track coming down from San Gabriel peak. Besides, the climb up to Mt Dis is a boring asphalt road climb. We were here for single track. Maybe next time...:geek:
At Eaton saddle we jumped on the Valley Forge trail. This is the trail I recently worked on with MWBA so I knew the lower two miles were in great shape. The upper section is going to get worked on during the next trail work day. It was a little overgrown at the top and some sections of thread need some rebuilding but overall the trail rode great :)

All right, I'll bite... All of the other trail names pop up quite often. The Valley Forge one I really hadn't heard of until recently. Is it not as popular for some reason?

Nice ride, by the way.

Nice job. Isnt great to work on a trail one day and get to appreciate the fruits of your labor a couple days later. I did a trail work on VF with Hans, Steve, @dstepper , and others several years ago. I think that trails runs by Camp Hi Hill as youre climbing out?

VF is rarely ridden due to it dropping you deep into the "canyon of despair" (kidding... sorta) and having a reputation of being seriously overgrown (probably due to my mtb project write up). This was my 3rd time on it and it is in the best shape I've seen it in and MWBA will get it good to go after this weekend. There is no easy way out of the canyon north of Wilson either the trail or the road are both tough back to redbox.

That's the reason. VF and Rattlesnake/Kenyon Devore drop you into the canyon and the only way out is to climb. 5miles grind. Usually in direct sun and it gets steeper towards the end at Red Box.
    Get some!

    Where did I leave off?
Valley Forge crosses the Gabrielino just before the campground which shares the trail's name. We had a quick discussion on which way to climb out of the valley. One option is to continue descending to Valley Forge camp and then take the Redbox Rincon fire road back to the top. I've climbed that fire road many times with @rossage and I have never climbed the Gab from that point. Weather was perfect and the dirt was in the best condition for climbing, so up the Gab we went.

For you OC folks, the Gab here compares to the lower section of Holy Jim with the big boulders and creek crossings. There are some hike-a-bike sections and we encountered a couple of downed trees which we scrambled over.

OK to finish off the story, we were at Redbox for the second time of the day. David was feeling super stocked and suggested that instead of just riding to our cars which were parked at Switzers, we take the Gabrielino all the way down to JPL. Just then a bunch of familiar faces started to appear from the direction of strawberry peak. Turns out the CORBA big wigs were out doing the strawberry peak loop plus the newly reopened section of the Gab.

Carson decided he wanted to pick up the pace so he elected to join us. Just as we started to roll, we came around the corner and encountered a downed tree. Carson took out his saw and we made quick work of it.
    IMG_4130.JPG

We finally reached the home stretch of the arroyo with the numerous creek crossings. Carson was in front of me applying power as he started a short climb when suddenly we heard a loud SNAP. Immediately I thought it was a snapped chain but it turned out to be a cracked crank. Carson's carbon fiber crank snapped at the pedal mount.

Lucky for us we were near the end of the ride and Carson was able to limp his way out. We continued on to Alex's house and left our bikes there while we used an UBER to get back to Switzer to retrieve our cars.

We drove back down the hill and went straight to a Ramen house in Pasadena for some post ride eats and a tasty adult beverage.

Just another great ride in the San Gabes.

That’s actually not poison oak but a raspberry or blackberry plant. The poison oak leaves are turning bright red right now.

Carson's bike is not that old. Maybe less that one year? Custom build.

I'm super reactive to poison oak, anything close I will try to avoid.
