I'm hoping to do Monroe Truck Trail, both lower and upper, this Sunday, and loop up East Fork\back side GMR and finish at GMR/Sierra Madre. I'll have more certainty on Friday.

    Any tentative takers?

Is upper the fire road that continues after you cross GMR?

From everything I've read yes. I've not ridden it though. My plan is up MTT, down upper MTT, up backside GMR, (aka East Fork), and down either GMR or Lower MTT, whichever is desired.

Down GMR is a high speed fun fest; down lower MTT is fun but must watch for hikers/climbers.

Is east fork paved? Down lower MTT is fun, GMR too but its not dirt!

GMR is asphalt. I ride both dirt and tarmac.

I wanted to do this! I wanted to...but I could not because I'm temporarily disabled. The ride you describe is a cross country epic (to me it is anyways). Another option once you reach GMR Tarmac is to continue to climb east on the road towards San Antonio Canyon and make a right onto Sunset Ridge Trail for another 20+miles of fast earthen fire road/double track DH that would drop you off in San Dimas. The maximum elevation would be about 5,800' at Sunset Peak.

We'll have to do that one when you are returned to duty :)

I've never ridden in that area. I'd like to if the schedule permits! I'm not opposed to road miles to connect trails... I do that quite often.

So, I'm resurrecting this. I intend to be at the intersection of GMR and Sierra Madre at 7 am Sunday morning (May 3). Since I'm training for the Crusher, my ideal ride will take me up Monroe Truck Trail, then up GRR, then through Mt Baldy Village, and on up to the ski lifts. I've yet to make it to the ski lifts...

If anyone else shows up, I'll go up Monroe Truck Trail. If not (or if preferred) I'll be heading up GMR on the pavement. But I'll be on my MTB.

I'm in a silver GMC Canyon crew cab with a blue Giant XTC.

I think this comes out to roughly 55 miles and 7,000 feet of climb.

Something tells me this ride is jinxed...ain't gonna happen - truck's cooling system isn't right. Gotta fix it tonight/tomorrow.

Unfortunately the truck repair will cost almost as much as the bike.

Any chance you'll be doing this on this coming Sunday?

Chances are somewhere between slim and none for this Sunday, in the interest of domestic tranquility. :)

This Sunday is Mother's Day. And the truck may not be done.

Apparently I'm going to have to figure out a different ride...I've been informed that Upper Monroe can't be ridden from GMR through to East Fork. It goes through a fire camp, and the authorities frown on mingling with the convicts. It's gated; can just tell from Google Maps. I don't see any cutoffs or cutouts around it. Bummer.
