I know at least one other IMTBer who owns one of the affected diesels... I guess 45mpg from a clean diesel was too good to be true!

We'll see how this turns out for the owners...

I read about this in today's dead-tree version of the OC Birdcage Liner...I mean, Register. Not good for VW.

On the other hand, if you get more pollution but more mpg, does that equal out with lower pollution but lower mpg? Inquiring minds want to know, and I don't trust AQMD or CARB to tell the truth.

I've read just about every article out there over the last couple days, and one thing they all agree on, is that the "fix" will affect mileage and performance.

One of the biggest selling points for us was the almost 800 mile range.

My stepdad has one of the affected TDI's and he loves it. Has 170k on the odo with absolutely zero repair bills and minimal maintenance even. Routinely gets 50+ mpg and the car runs strong. Now he just hopes it takes VW a really long time to come up with a fix.

2014 Passat here... And a gas Touareg.

I did notice that the diesel Touareg (V6) was not listed in the affected vehicles...

Don't know the answer to this but I would bet you are correct. I own an older duramax diesel pickup that mysteriously had some emissions stuff fall off and a small "software update" and I can tell you it got much better mileage, ran cooler and had lots more power. Decided a few years ago it just wasn't worth the risks and returned it back to boring old stock. Doesn't really matter to me now though as I put more miles on my bike than I do the truck.

Oh jeez, they may have fudged the emissions a bit but at least they built a safe car by the looks of it. Hope everyone was ok

Yeah, fortunately my wife was the only one in the car, and she walked away without a scratch...however, had there been someone in the passenger seat, they would have been injured. The passenger front door was pushed in about 16-18". She was hit at about 45 mph....the other driver ran the red light and never hit the brakes.

Scary... I know that "lump in the throat" feeling. I went through it once back in 1994 with my wife and an uninsured teenage driver.

My brother and I had this very discussion last night. He has the Toureg diesel and so far is VERY happy with the mileage.

Pulling the thread a little how are they going to enforce drivers bringing their vehicles in to be "fixed"? What can they do if you just never take your car in?

Eventually you will have to when you need to get it smog tested for registration.

CARB can do something like mandate that no cars will be tested till they are confirmed as having software updated. Cross checking the VIN with a database. Dollars to donuts that'll be what happens.

I can also bet you same that there will be after-market software patches that can be put on to bring it back to the way it is, or perhaps even more power/mileage.

All the V6 and larger diesels have urea injection systems to keep them clean. That's the real fix, but diesels already cost a premium and VW Group didn't want to create even higher prices by having a system on board for their budget four pot cars.

If you are talking about having to add the DEF(diesel exhaust fuel)....all the 2015 TDI's use it. My wife's Golf Sportwage had it, the new Passat has it as well. Both have a 4 gallon tank for it.

    Yes, that's the stuff!
Up until now, they didn't have that on the four cylinder cars. Mercedes, BMW, and the larger VWGroup cars (Toureg, Q7) have had that all along to the best of my knowlege.

The 2014 Passat we have also has the urea system, and it's part of the scandal.

You TDI owners, have you had many reliability issues with your cars? I've read alot of owner complaints. If so , how many miles were on your car. I've been a VW fan for years, never owned a diesel .

The Golf Sportwagen only had 2900 miles on it.

The new Passat is only at about 700 miles.

No problems, other than the pics above. :gag:

My brother had one of these back in the 80s! It was a great little truck, and had over 500,000 miles when he sold it. The problem with this model in cold climates like Buffalo... The fuel lines were exposed underneath. When it was driven in very cold weather, the fuel would freeze and it would only idle.

Volkswagen still sells a pickup, but not in the US. Maybe never now!
