@mountaingirl sara , I recommend you steer him away from the mangy XC trails and towards something with at least 140mm drops and >30 degree slopes.

Or just send him to a Ninja Skills mountain bike clinic. Then he will be able to ride everything on a gravel bike. :whistling:

When @mountaingirl sara first started drooling over new bikes, she mentioned that as a possibility. 5010 would be a great first bike... even though it falls under DDD's travel requirements.

Ok, so the bike Brent(my hubs) has his sights set on is the one he rode at Tapia. 2017 Intense Spider 275c Pro Build XL , his buddy is asking $2300
The seller is 6’3” and the bike is too small for him, he’s a good friend of ours and is honest so there’s that

I would think at 6', he needs a Large for Intense bikes. I have a 2017 Primer and at 5-8, ride a Medium. My buddy who is 5-10 has a 2018 Primer and also rides a Medium. I had had the 2018 new and improved Tracer and had a Medium in that bike too. While I wished the reach was a tad longer, the Large was just too big.

Wouldn't hurt to check it out. I think Intense is sized very similar to Ibis so XL may work.

Please don't let him get an XL Intense. I rode an XL Intense at 6'4" with long torso. The newer Intense models are generally longer than my 2015. A good price isn't a good price if it doesn't fit and he doesn't enjoy fighting it. The 2017 Spider's 492 (19.3") is a long reach, and 25.5" is a pretty long eff top tube. I have a hard time believing the bike is too small for the 6'3" guy.

On the other hand, tell your 6'3" friend that I have a bike that's DEFINITELY not too small for him. How about an XXL Megatower? :whistling:

Thanks all, I honestly can’t tell you Hooligans how much you all have taught me, I may have stayed in the mtb dark ages for the rest of my life if @Mikie hadn’t wrangled me onto this forum:inlove:. Also, your input on any mtb subject means a lot :inlove: (some other topics...:eek:not so much:Roflmao:p)
Brent pulled the trigger on his buddies Intense, he gets a nice stipend from Disney every year for athletic stuff so he figures, worst case scenario he can sell the bike and upgrade.
Done deal! Now to work on those biking legs :sneaky:

No. Intense are generally longer until about 2018 or 19 when Ibis might have caught up. Ibis were notoriously tiny until at least 2017.

    Congrats?

Well, he may want to run a short stem and narrower bars like 35 mm stem and 760 bars. Wider bars and longer stems will have him very stretched out. On the other hand, the chainstays are so short on that bike the front end may want to lift while climbing. Don't tell him that. Just let him ride. He will adapt, especially with no frame of reference.

Good info, I’ll tell him to look into all of that, he wants to take it to our friend Mark who works at a LBS to get it dialed in

Were they both 29ers? And again, we were talking 2017 model year, not current. 2017 Ripley XL (29er) was nearly 50 mm shorter in reach than the 27.5 wheeled 2017 XL Sniper.
