Looking for a dual suspension SZ L mtb!

Hey all! So hell has frozen over and my husband wants a mtb! Woo hoo!
He wants to buy used since it’s his first real mtb. Thought I’d check here first as I trust most of you Hooligans.
We are looking at Pinkbike, but there isn’t much right now as you probably know.

 

How tall is he?

I have a co worker who may be selling his Fuel Ex he bought on a whim and hasn’t ridden it.he bought it used from the original owner.

I don't know what your budget is, but this seems like a lot of bike for the money, with some peace of mind that it's been given some TLC prior to sale. https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/2785344/. That's awesome! I came across this yesterday as I was trying to help a buddy look for a bike on CL. Not sure what your budget is, but looked like a good deal for an almost new bike.

If it was me and my significant other, i'd have them demo a few different bikes/styles. See what they gravitate towards. Geos are all over the place even with bikes in same category.

Then you can narrow your used bike search.

I bet if you scored a frame then put the call out to all the hooligans on here to search their garages for the components you'd have a complete bike by this coming weekend!

 

Are you looking for recs on models? If so: Ibis. Ripley LS or Mojo 3 (although maybe XL on their old sizing). Done.

 

I got brakes, cranks, bars, stem, saddle, grips, excellent/like new and on the cheap.

Depending on his ape index a large Ibis may be too small. I fall in between a large and extra-large with their bikes.

 

May as well make it a triple?

I think it's worthwhile to rent a couple of bikes for a weekend each. That way it's not such a leap of faith to go all in on a bike. Even a good used bike isn't cheap. Renting is at least some satisfaction insurance.

More importantly IMO, you and he can get a bead on what kind of riding he likes, thinks he likes, desires to pursue, etc. The best chance of him picking up the MTB habit is if he has fun on rides. Figure out out what's fun, do it a bunch, and then, optionally, branch into other flavors of riding. The riding itself drives the suitable-bike decision. Riding different suitable bikes focuses the preferences further.

I think he’s just a hair under 6”. He felt the reach was a bit much on the XL Intense he rode last weekend

Hah, sounds like he is not the only one with challenges ahead... . Always a team (as you know!!!!!!). Protip: If there is any HAB when you are ahead, get to the top, run back, grab his bike and push it up for him. He will be eternally grateful for your kind gesture, and will secretly vow to never be chicked that hard ever again. All wins!!

Keep it light, sis. No identity changes will occur...we're all just people, riding bikes when the mood strikes, sharing the experience when it works out.

 

@mountaingirl sara , I recommend you steer him away from the mangy XC bikes and towards something with at least 140mm rear travel.

 

He'll appreciate all that travel for the one rock on GE!
