There was a discussion recently on that other forum about lights... I can't remember the brand that was recommended several times. I'm looking for both a front and tail light.

This will be for road and dirt... I don't ride at night, but I do ride the roads to most of the trails I ride.

    Thanks!

Niterider has been in the game awhile.

I see they upgraded the 1800 to include two additional low-light settings and a charge indicator. With that, I think it would be the perfect light, if somewhat heavy in the battery and lengthy charge time.

cygo lights are based in OC. And they supported the whiting poker run but giving away lights for prizes!

My buddy won one there, it's really very nice and great value too!

Used my new Majicshine light last night for the first time and was thoroughly satisfied w/ the output! Amazed that a $100 light could look so bright! Way better than the Nightsuns I spent about $500 in the early nineties. Can't cure the common cold, but we can make light!

Forget the old lights with the separate battery packs. The newer all ones have plenty of light, last just as long, small to carry in pack, and you can buy extra batteries for muti day bikepacking rides.

Holy thread resurrection Batman! For the same reason this thread was originally started I'm looking for a relatively good light to get me to the trailhead. I may use it on the road as well. I would prefer a self-contained battery but a small remote battery would not be a deal-killer.

Can't do much better than the Nite Rider. I've had mine 2 or 3 years now. Lasts forever on a charge.

    Mine's the 750 lumen version.

That's what I'm leaning towards. I had one about 20 years ago but I think all it had was a 10 watt bulb.
That's actually the one I'm looking at. Thanks.

Ed this is a great light also especially for the price and all the mounting options it has(the black one not the ugly ass pink one)...https://www.jensonusa.com/Light-and-Motion-Urban-900-Light
I've got several lights and this one is my favorite, it's just simple and it works and has a real nice beam when mounted on the bars. Combined with a spot beam light of 500+ lumens on the helmet and night riding is fun.

    My $.02.....

Get alight Designed for MTB use.
Some of the bike light don’t have mounts that can handle the bounce, and they will flip on you at the worst time.

I would avoid any light that is attached by an elastic band.

    One more vote for Nightrider.

F it. I just ordered a NiteRider Pro 1400 Race. It has a remote battery and was a little more than I wanted to spend but who knows? I may just end up liking night rides.

I consider the NiteRiders to be like Cadillacs or maybe Mercedes Benz.
I have some Cygolites. They are like Buicks to me. A bit cheaper but good quality. And, they are local in Santa Ana (of course not made there)
There are so many good lights and at reasonable prices.
My Cygolites are Expilions with removable batteries. I have a couple of spares if I want to go really long, but haven't really needed them yet.
All in one is the way to go. Good to almost 1000 lumens in most brands.

Serfas, Light and Motion are a couple of other nice choices. I see no reason to go off brand or China to be cheap. Lots of good quality choices at decent prices.

I got the 1200 pro version of that light. Best light for riding Sunset trail or El Prieto at night.
I’ve seen too many people that went the cheap route and when it’s time to descend their equipment malfunctions. Or it doesn’t stay on when the going gets rough and bumpy.

Light and Motion batteries are high quality but they are pricey and come with only a limited 90 day warranty. :(

I got a Serfas 1200 on the bars with a separate battery that doubles as a rear light if needed. On the helmet I use a Serfas 900 that uses a replaceable/rechargeable Samsung camera battery.
Good mounts and carry case included.
Great warranty, but the products are solid too.
Really liked my old Light and Motion HID but the bulb itself was about $100 to replace

I know I'll probably catch grief for this but I've had nothing but good luck with Magicshine. I upgraded to the Monteer unit this year and it provides more light than I'll ever need..plus a great quick release mount...a bit pricey for a Chinese made unit..but really impressed thus far.

Why would you catch grief? Lots of people have used them with great results. And they re-released some much nicer product the last few years that is a bit more expensive than their original stuff but also more reliable. I've got a couple sets of their newer stuff plus most of their original lights and batteries going back 10 years are still functional.

I've had good luck with the cheap Chinese knockoffs too.

I still use a MS or knockoff on my handlebar since I can strap the battery to my frame. But I've gone to self-contained USB re-chargeable light for my helmet. Mostly for bikepacking so I can re-charge off a battery pack. But I like the compact size for normal riding too. This is the one I have, quite happy with it at 8 hrs burn time on low: https://ridepdw.com/collections/hea...over-700-usb-headlight?variant=11889006673977. The PDW helmet mount is worthless, instead I use an old MS helmet mount glued to my helmet.

I also have a hub dynamo with headlight on my hardtail. It's nice since I never have to worry about charging it.

Wow... Looking back at the start of this thread, my riding has changed.  I've ridden Motorway more times in the dark than in the daytime, and several of the commenters up above haven't been seen in years. I'm IMTBold. :D:p

Nice looking light, @UPSed . Sometime in the future, you'll have to bring it down for a night ride in the mountains.

As for me... I still run an Amazon knockoff self contained light as a backup, and my Bright Eyes 1600 as the primary on the bars. Two seasons in, and it still holds the listed charge.

However! My Nightrider Lumina 750's came with those very lame rubber straps that did exactly that. They would end up pointing straight down at the ground when I hit the chudder. So I bought their upgrades.

Do NOT Get this mount no matter what! It SUCKS:

    This mount is WAAAAAAYYYY better:
