You can come play with me @Mikie! I've been "working" sunrise to sunset at the Cajon Pass, so my riding has been neglected. These fires destroy but also reveal. First come the firefighters, then the looters, then the linemen, then the archaeologists. Despite what some people think, we are not the looters. I digress...

I was going to suggest the more manageable Holy Jim- San Juan... 50 miles on the nose and about 7,000 feet.

BUT, check out the OTB website. They are doing a 7 hour jaunt in and around the Jackson Lake area sunday morning.
Hans, Igor and Burt will be leading this sufferfest.

Hi Faust! Manageable is all relative! Up holy jim, main divide to blue jay, then down San juan = manageable.. but..

How do you get get to Trabuco parking lot after SJ? is it all road? or Thru Caspers?/ O Neill/ ?? Is it mostly flat after San Juan?
This is just outside my comfort zone, but I want to try it one of these days. I think I could make it fine to san juan but might die trying to get back to the
car after San Juan... u think the hard part is behind me after SJ?
    thanks for any advice!

Yes, at the bottom of San Juan Trail, you go through Caspers, up Star Rise, up/down Bell View Trail back to Dove Canyon. From there it is just down the street.

Compared to Harding/San Juan.....HJ/San Juan is much more managable. 16 miles shorter and 3000' less climbing.

Yep... Agree that manageable is all relative. The HJ-San Juan loop is exactly 50 miles and around 7200 feet of gain if you start at the "taco plaza" on the corner of Plano Trabuco and Santa Margarita Parkway. It's a quick drop down to the Trabuco Wash from the plaza.

Keep in mind that the first water opportunity is at Bluejay campground at mile 23ish and then again in Caspers. I always check the Caspers website, because they lose water frequently. I've seen the Garmin hit 115 at the top of Oso, and then had no water in the park...

After San Juan, we jump the fence into Caspers and take the old fire road past the Hot Springs. This turns into the San Juan Creek Trail, which goes from wooded and overgrown to a single track with some HAB sections that runs above the 74. Back into Caspers "proper" and up Starr Rise and along the Bell View trail back to Dove Canyon. This pops out a few hundred yards from the starting plaza.

The Strava from the most recent:
    https://www.strava.com/activities/635575874

This ride is much more manageable than the Harding- San Juan loop that Jason has done, and I bailed on last fall. Same starting point in RSM, but take O'Neill and the road over to Harding, up and over Santiago peak, and along Main Divide to San Juan for a grand total of around 70 miles and 10,000 feet.

It is actually, surprisingly so. It's a long hard day, but I'd do it again. I'm sort of watching to see if HJ is opened and if those lunatics are going to be doing it tomorrow or not (and if the pace is social or hammer :p).
