Well it was time for a daytrip. @horsebikerider and I had our 18th anninversary this weekend. So the 2 of us headed down to Cuyamaca State Park for a ride.

I've said it before, this is very much your basic/standard XC loop. Don't bring your enduro rigs...even your short travel XC rigs are overkill. Suz decided to take a chance and brought the SS. First time she has made that choice on a daytrip ride.....it is a slippery slope, and she hopped off of it no problem.

We parked at the Harvey Moore Trailhead.....

Across the hwy and onto West Side Trail. Narrow singletrack meanders along the hwy. Short little rollers in and out of the trees and brush. Some sand here and there.....
    IMG_5576.jpg IMG_5578.jpg

Eventually it would drop off off at the hwy crossing to get over to Cold Spring Trail. They rerouted this part of the trail last year....makes for a much gentler climb. We would get passed a rider here. At the end of the new trail, it drops you out on to Stonewall Creek Fire Road....we turned right and descended down a slightly torn up, rocky, rutted fire road.

From here, it would be a very mild gentle grade climb up Upper Green Valley Fire Road. The road looks flat, but it does go up.

We ran into some of the locals......
    IMG_3414.JPG IMG_3415.JPG

    Saw 8-10 wild turkeys.

We ran into a large group at the intersection of SoapStone Grade Fire Road....they were coming down the trail we were going up. Lots of 140-160mm rigs going way too slow down the trail. For us, the climb starts out kinda rough. Some short steep sections, throw in lots of loose baby heads, some gravel, a few ruts here and there....and you have a great climb.

The only downer with this climb, is there is no shade and usually feels like you are getting cooked. about 2/3rd's the way up the breeze starts to blow and temps become quite nice. Suz was attacking it and doing well. She stopped for a rest and I went by....I really do enjoy this climb.

Almost at the top you can look back and see where you came from....sort of.....

This leads us into a series of ups and downs along La Cima Trail. Great breeze blowing now. Suz went around a slight bend in the trail, and found out the edges of the trail were pretty soft....we'll keep that in mind for later.

La Cima Trail puts us back onto the CA Hiking and Riding Trail. This is a neat ST that goes along a low grass valley. Up and down....smooth trail with some flowy sections.

    IMG_3418.JPG IMG_3419.JPGIMG_3421.JPG
Around one of these turns Suz was reminded that the edges of the trail was soft....it grab her tire and flung her off into the dirt. Good thing she found a soft place to land. No harm...no foul.

We would end up on Soapstone Grade Fire Road for a short traverse.
At the end of this, we used to take a left hand turn onto the singletrack....I was told by a friend that that was closed to bikes and we'd have to take an alternate trail to get around. So we made the right hand turn and headed up the Minshall Trail. Trail was relatively smooth and flat, but had a fair amount of sand....it was all ridable. This would take us over by Lake Cuyamaca.

Across to Los Caballos Trail for a short stretch....lots of short punchy little climbs in here....lots of sand. This would be the connector to get over to Cold Stream Trail. More of the same here...but all ridable. This drops us out at the base of Stonewall Peak. Across the hwy and into Paso Picacho Campground. Quick stop for some water before we headed on.....

Short cruise through the campground on a few of the trails. They get steeper as you climb up higher. Suz was starting to feel the miles and climbing on the SS. The last push to the Lookout Rd. gets steep...
    IMG_5591.jpg IMG_5593.jpg IMG_5594.jpg

Unfortunately, getting to the Lookout Rd does stop of the pain. A short paved climb up with grades in the 18% range await you. Just put your head down and pedal. Today it didn't seem as long or as bad....that is not what Suz was thinking.

Once you reach the intersection of Fern Flat Fire Rd. it is mostly 5 miles of DH back to the truck. Suz was having a grand ole' time on the fire road....it hasn't had much traffic on it and was in rough shape. Coming down West Mesa Loop Fire Road on one of the few chunky sections, the back tire kicked up a rock and she was riding the bucking bronco for a little bit. Looked like she was gonna go down, but she composed herself and pulled it out.....could have been a bad place to crash, especially at those speeds.

Soon enough we made it back to the truck.

Good times out with my #1.
