It can be done with some moon on Harding TT and the Luge, but Joplin will be a dark tunnel. Just ride by feel.

Monkey Piss took me down Webb Canyon (steep and chunky) my first real MTB ride. I was on a borrowed 2004 Giant NRS and it was at night and I still remember the glory. You won’t be a noob after Saturday regardless of the outcome.

I’ve done this ride once, and it included a climb into Modjeska Canyon and up Harding Truck Trail. I’m not sure of your shuttle drop off spot, so I’ll PM you my #, and we can chat about logistics.

And that all makes perfect sense... Whichever climb you do, you’re going to be climbing straight for at least a couple hours. You’ll know before 4 Corners how you’re doing. The trick is to back off and reassess constantly.

Do enough of those climbs and you’ll fall into the category that worries more about the last two miles than the 12 miles of fire road to get there... :whistling:

I just saw the 1:00 PM start time. Too late for me...

Let's see what I can talk the professor into earlier in the day... And what @mtnbikej can talk him out of. :Roflmao

I thought you were referring to the chunky part of Main Divide between 4 corners and Joplin.

I meant that some of us focus our worries on the trail and don't worry at all about getting there. And the other half worries about getting there, but not the trail itself. Ying and Yang.

    Oversimplified....

    @Ocpop and Co.

My Intel indicates Joplin is in terrible shape and should be postponed until after they work on it on the 18th. Refer to the bottom of the photo:ED328CB4-D717-416C-8BAF-1DC97B6C14BB.jpeg
I propose we ride an alternative locale this weekend. I’ll still be in OC, but maybe we can explore more of Aliso/Wood Cyn/Laguna Coast Wilderness Park/Bommer Canyon?

    Thoughts?

First time down for me... I was on the trail on foot after the fire in 2007- 4 years before my Diamondback purchase. I watched the bulldozer cut a path up Cadillac. One day it wasn't visible from RSM, and the next day it was. Pretty crazy. I hiked up from the bottom, with no real sense of where I was. I didn't make it all the way up before turning around.

Initial impressions from a virgin: It is a beautiful trail, and the scenery from top to bottom is hard to beat. There were a lot more smooth fast sections than I envisioned, with really techy features in between the flow. The flowy sections reminded me a lot of Holy Jim... And there were several scree sections that reminded me of the scree on Motorway or Trabuco- but larger, sharper and steeper. The rock gardens are a riot... The chunky one is going to take 20 or 30 tries :Roflmao, but the longer faster one farther down is a riot. Yeah, there are several large trees down, but I wouldn't skip the trail because of them. Riot from top to bottom and well worth the climb to get there (10/4000 via Harding). It's going in the rotation.

I'm uploading the video from the run, but here are a few screenshots of the downed trees, and the rock garden.

Joplin from top to bottom... I only edited out the stops, where J waited to regroup.

    I’m ready to go again...

    R
ock Garden at 4:40, and downed trees at 5:40, and my favorite section was probably the 14-16 minute part. That was just a riot...
