I’d so be there if I was there...:gotnothing:

My mind is made up. :geek: Never had a run I didn’t enjoy, no matter how much dabbing. Joplin taught me as much as Yeager. Pretty wild ride for two miles. Do it.

Yeah Joplin is the real deal. Getting up to it is fun too. Last time I was on it in July it was rough as I've seen it.

Definitely a maybe for this ride depending on schedule/timing

Maaaaybe... with some route modifications for me.
Only time I did Joplin was with @Cougar @mtnbikej, @Faust29 and a couple others. Craig and I left his truck at Cooks then drove up to Silverado to start. Cuts 1000’ of climbing and an hour, and puts it in the range of (barely) doable for me.

Joplin can be very memorable in wintry weather. Just getting to Main Divide Rd can feel a little wild.

Then you finally reach the steep cleft that demarcates the saddle in Saddleback, Joplin Trail running down it two miles to Old Camp. It’s intimidating, but in winter it drops you quickly into the foothills and potentially better weather.

    Example:

A tasty bonus is to first summit Santiago Peak for an overview of where Joplin drops into the cleft. One of the best vistas in OC, followed by a classic test piece trail = premiere bikeaneering, with a fun, fast blast down Santiago Truck Trail to cool down.

Mamas said after Christmas for me, and if we can follow the Warriors Society brush clearing, that would be ideal. I did it once but don’t remember most of it. All I have is one photo from 5 years ago with the mighty Giant.B2895EB2-D190-4AD0-83BD-9369DBC332AC.jpeg

I did it once... it was intimadating... off of main divide, you see this tiny single track, barely visible that goes down the canyon... really? this is a trail? But with all things, must be done again..

Sometime in early 2020 for me. If @Ocpop is interested, I’ll show him the way, not that I know it well, but when in doubt, climb.

    After the brush clearing.

First time I did Joplin in the 80's I had to pedal all the way down the first drop off the saddle to the big oaks as the brush was dense and above the handlebars, if you stopped pedaling you stopped. Probably for the best as cantilevers don't really stop very well.

I don't miss rigid bikes, cantilevers and narrow lousy tires. I probably shouldn't miss Joplin either but it does feel pretty remote for being right in our backyard.

Two weeks ago I texted @herzalot that I was interested in his shuttle version for this rise. Then I blew up on my first ride in awhile, and texted him again that there was no way I could do this ride. I've gotten in a couple rides since then, and assuming I can keep up my "training" regimen, I may be in for the shortened, shuttle version of this ride. We'll see.

Thanks man! I appreciate the camaraderie. Just know I’m not responsible for your safety or welfare or enjoyment or navigation or tire/suspension PSI or frame HTA/STA, or brake lever angle relative to a horizontal plane, or what you had for breakfast or will have for dinner, etc.

This doesn't mean I will abandon you off the side of a cliff. Nor does it mean I won’t wrap your limbs in tourniquets or give you mouth-to-mouth if necessary, but I won’t bear liability as to the effectiveness of my resuscitation attempts, however long their duration.:whistling:

The same goes for all’yallz on any ride I “host,” and I expect the same treatment from youz. :)

edit: All riders of intermediate [or better] levels are welcome to participate in accordance with the conditions set forth above, but if you shuttle this ride, you might get ridiculed, right @Faust29 and @mtnbikej ...?

edit#2: especially if you keel over and cramp! I will literally take photos of you, including close-ups of your grimacing face(s) and bent-over behinds, and post them on this forum. :giggle:

The possibility of mouth to mouth doesn’t scare me as much as the notion that this ride might take all day and into the night.

And yes, shuttlers will be ridiculed.
