Here is our next trail work.

    WHAT: Brushing Joplin
    WHEN: Saturday, May 18th
WHERE: Maple Springs Visitor Center in Silverado Canyon
    TIME: 7:30 AM

We'll drive up to 4-Corners, then bike up to Joplin. We will stash our bikes on Joplin and work down to Old Camp and hike back up, where we'll coast back down to 4-Corners. I can haul one of the trimmers up on the bike and back down.

We will focus on the brushing this time around, despite the rumors that the tread on Joplin is in need of attention. Lunch will be served afterward.

Brush work.....trimming back the trees and brush to help clear the trail. Generally with gas powered trimmers and hand tools.

Usually in groups of 2-3.....rotating running the power tools.

Starting from the top, working your way down the trail, then hiking back up.

I'd like to make it out for this. Gotta get a hall pass from the wife but I should be able to do this. Love joplin, but it's in rough shape right now. The rocks in the trail make it spicier then it's been in years.

That stretch I almost walk as fast as I bike :)

I haven't been down Joplin in several years. However I can only assume the trail is in poor shape because it never handles rain well... and we have had a ton of rain this spring. I understand that people like to keep it "untamed" so that it is a technical challenge, but there are numerous stretches where "untamed" is simply another word for "unmaintained". To me a trail washing down into the creekbed because it isn't maintained is not the same thing as a well-maintained, technically challenging trail.

I hear what you are saying..:.but I tend to view Joplin as an advanced/backcountry trail. Being wild and untamed makes Joplin what it is.

My understanding is that they are only brushing, not doing anything earthwork.

Was last on it late November, and thought it was in best shape in awhile. Someone had done substantial tread work on some slide areas. There were some big trees to climb over. The churned up dirt and rock from motos was unpleasant. But honestly I dont mind since I expect it and relish the rawness of a jam of a trail.

J, any clarification on the day/date?

    Here's a quotable quote:

I'm with these guys that just expect it to be raw and don't believe that that wholly detracts from the ride.

I'd say don't bother with the trail tread. The motos will erase much of the work.

I just spoke with Keith and the trail work on Joplin is postponed until further notice. Conflicts with the SHARE Poker ride Saturday. He encourages anyone to join in on the poker ride as it supports a great group and is a generally good time.
Most likely Autumn of 2019 will be an official trail work day for Joplin.
    Thanks
